Jim Courier announces what he’s realised about the future of tennis after watching Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz beat Jannik Sinner in one of the greatest tennis matches of all time.

Expectations were high ahead of Alcaraz and Sinner’s first Grand Slam final meeting, and somehow, they were blown out of the water.

In five other-worldly sets, Alcaraz defeated Sinner, 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6, to clinch his second consecutive French Open title.

The match will live long in the memory of both those in attendance on Court Philippe Chatrier, and those watching around the world.

Speaking after the match, tennis legend Jim Courier announced what he realised about the future of the sport while watching the final.

The former world number one shared his thoughts on the current state of tennis while speaking to TNT Sports.

“I’ve got to tell you, people talk about the future of tennis, the future is already happening, people,” said Courier.

“We just may not have realised it. This is the sixth straight Major won by one of these two guys.

“We’re living in their time right now. It happened a year and a half ago. It started. The clock is already moving forward, but they’re so young.

“We might have another decade if we’re lucky with these guys. I mean, this is the very first time that they’ve met in a Major final, and it did not disappoint.”

Courier couldn’t believe the level shown throughout the match, as Alcaraz and Sinner battled it out for over five hours on Court Philippe Chatrier.

“What we were marvelling at here was that they were so tired, but the level of their play never decreased, not once,” he said.

“I mean, that level from Carlos [Alcaraz] in that tiebreaker was as close to heavenly tennis as I could possibly imagine.

“I cannot, still cannot… I mean, to come back from all that disappointment, nearly two hours later, [Jannik] Sinner was still fighting and grinding and scraping.

“He’s down the entire fifth set, and somehow gets back into a tiebreaker.

“It was just an absolute pleasure to be able to see this in any way, shape, or form.”

Who was the last player to win a Slam before Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s era of dominance began?

637 days have passed since a player not named Alcaraz or Sinner won a Grand Slam title, doing so at the 2023 US Open.

It was Serbia’s Novak Djokovic who won that day, taking down Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Winning his third Grand Slam of the year and the 24th of his career, few would’ve predicted it would be Djokovic’s last.

Now, it very well may not be, as the 38-year-old continues to make deep runs at the Major tournaments, although as every day passes it seems less and less likely that we’ll see Djokovic win Slam number 25.

Perhaps he will have his best chance of doing so at Wimbledon next month, an event he’s excelled at in the past.

Djokovic has appeared in the previous six finals at the All England Club, winning four titles.

Losing to the young Spaniard in 2023 and 2024, Djokovic will no doubt be out for revenge in 2025, as he looks to prove he still has more to give at the top of the men’s game.

It won’t just be Djokovic hoping to end Sinner and Alcaraz’s streak of Grand Slam wins, however, as the likes of Alexander Zverev, Jack Draper, and Lorenzo Musetti will all travel to London with genuine title ambitions.

Only time will tell who will emerge victorious, but it will certainly be worth tuning in for when Wimbledon begins on Monday, June 30.
