Jessica Pegula has continued her impressive start to the 2025 season after reaching the Charleston Open final.
Pegula beat Ekaterina Alexandrova in a close-fought semi-final, where the American had to battle back from a break down in the deciding set.
This follows on from her run at the Miami Open, where Pegula was beaten by Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Despite the disappointment of losing that final, Pegula has bounced straight back and has now made history after reaching her first final at the Charleston Open.

Jessica Pegula reacts after making American history at the Charleston Open
There have been multiple American champions at the Charleston Open over the years, including last year’s winner Danielle Collins, who Pegula beat in her quarter-final this year.
However, there has not been a singles final at the Charleston tournament with two American players since 1990.
This is when Martina Navratilova beat a 14-year-old Jennifer Capriati, with Pegula now confirming the seventh all-American final in the tournaments history against Sofia Kenin.
Pegula has praised American women’s tennis in recent weeks following the Australian Open success of Madison Keys, and reacted to making her own history at the Charleston Open when speaking on the Tennis Channel desk.
“That’s awesome, I mean just again shows the depth that the American’s have right now, especially on the women’s side,” said Pegula. “There’s so many of us it’s annoying almost.
“You know, I mean every week there’s just someone to root for, because there’s usually somebody doing good and I’m just happy to be a part of it, so an all-American final will be a lot of fun tomorrow.”
Jessica Pegula explains why she prefers watching women’s tennis to men’s
Pegula is the world number four and has now won more matches than anyone else on the WTA Tour so far this year (24), overtaking Sabalenka after reaching the Charleston Open final.
When continuing to be asked questions on the Tennis Channel Podcast, Pegula revealed that she actually prefers watching women’s tennis to the ATP Tour.
The 31-year-old explained that the unpredictable nature of women’s tennis is what she finds most entertaining.
“I mean I prefer watching women than the men sometimes, because they’re just hitting aces and running down every ball and it’s the same kind of point every time,” said Pegula. “And I love the drama in women’s sport right now, I mean anybody can upset anybody, there’s so much depth and you never know what’s going to happen every single week, so to me it’s so entertaining.
“So, I think continuing to get more exposure to everybody that they can watch is really the way and that’s how people get interested and become fans and find somebody they like and that’s how the sport grows.”
Pegula can overtake Coco Gauff and become American number one if she beats Sofia Kenin to win the Charleston Open.
