Jessica Pegula is the latest to sing Stan Wawrinka’s praises following his remarkable run at the Australian Open this year.
He kickstarted his campaign with a comeback win over Laslo Djere, before battling through his second-round match in a dramatic five-set clash.
And, despite claiming a set against Taylor Fritz, the ninth seed had too much for the 40-year-old.
It marked a fairytale final run for the three-time Grand Slam champion, and he certainly garnered even more respect from Jessica Pegula.
Jessica Pegula claims that Stan Wawrinka was underrated
Speaking about Stan Wawrinka on her podcast, The Players’ Box, she recalled: “Some of us were watching and texting each other because it was a good match for a bit.
“I feel like Stan Wawrinka has had such an underrated career. He beat the big three in Slams and in huge matches. I feel like nobody talks about it. Nobody gives him the credit that he deserves.
What has been the biggest upset at the Australian Open so far?
“Also, his one-handed backhand is chef’s kiss. He hit a couple against Taylor, and I was rooting for Taylor, but also it’s like you are not happy with the outcome either, because you want to see him [Stan] still win. He hit a couple of one-handed backhands which were so pretty.”
Fritz revealed what he told Wawrinka at the net after their match, offering similar praise.
Stan Wawrinka justified his Australian Open wildcard
Given it was between Wawrinka and Nick Kyrgios for that final Australian Open wildcard spot, it is fair to say that the organisers made the right decision in the end.
After all, whilst the Swiss superstar made it to the third round, the hometown hero was physically ravaged as he and Thanasi Kokkinakis lost dramatically in the men’s doubles.
Kyrgios admitted himself that he was not ready for five-set tennis, which was a claim that was swiftly proven correct.
Why do you think Stan Wawrinka was never considered to be on the same level as Andy Murray?
Meanwhile, Wawrinka was gifted one last opportunity to thrive at an event he impressively won back in 2014, providing Australian Open fans and players with plenty of memorable final moments.
Hopefully, Kyrgios can enjoy a more consistent year on tour and be ready to return to Melbourne for the singles in 2027.
