Jessica Pegula expressed the challenges she faces in New York when she’s preparing to play at the US Open.
The 30-year-old is heading into the final Grand Slam of the season in improved form and she has established herself as one of the top contenders for the title.
It is well documented how much Jessica Pegula enjoys playing on hard courts and she maximising her time playing on the surface in front of her home fans.
She will have one final chance to play with home support this season at Flushing Meadows, but it will not be easy.
What does Jessica Pegula struggle with at the US Open?
After Jessica Pegula won the Canadian Open and reaching the Cincinnati Open final, her attention now turns toward the US Open.
2024 has not been the best for Pegula regarding Grand Slam titles as she has failed to progress beyond the second round.
However, she has one more opportunity to change that in the ‘Big Apple’, but World number six has admitted she has difficulty adjusting to the intense and fast-paced nature of New York.
“I am just going to lay on my couch with my dogs for a couple of days and relax and decompress. I’ll then head to New York, probably start hitting by Thursday and try to get used to the conditions and how the ball is feeling there,” Pegula told reporters.
“I want to get used to the courts and balls and get everything set up and get into my routine. When I get to New York it’s always hard to combat the craziness of the city.
“Hopefully I can maybe cancel some stuff with sponsors, I have a good excuse, so hopefully I can get out of a few extra things! Hopefully I can slip into a routine there pretty quickly and keep this momentum over the last few weeks going.”
What is Jessica Pegula’s US Open record?
Pegula has not always been able to find her best tennis at Grand Slams and she has won just 12 singles matches at the US Open in her career.
Four of those victories came in 2022 when she reached the quarter-finals for her first and only time in New York so far.
Seeded number eight, Pegula dropped just one set on the way to the last eight in 2022, where she was defeated by eventual champion Iga Swiatek.
She could only manage a fourth round win appearance in 2023, where US compatriot Madison Keys claimed a comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 win.
