World number seven Lorenzo Musetti is set to play in the fourth round of Roland Garros for the third time in his career.

Musetti will face Holger Rune in the round of 16 following his triumph over Mariano Navone in round three.

The Italian has been in impressive form during the clay swing, having made the semi-finals in Madrid and Rome, and the final at the Monte-Carlo Masters, where Musetti was ultimately defeated by Carlos Alcaraz.

His French Open campaign has shown promising signs, having dropped just one set throughout the tournament so far, which came in his match with Navone.

Following Flavio Cobolli’s loss to Alexander Zverev, Musetti is one of two men’s players from Italy left in the draw, along with Jannik Sinner, who had words for his compatriot after their third-round matches.

Jannik Sinner suggests what he wants to happen to Lorenzo Musetti

Sinner said of Musetti: “I think he’s having a great season but this is the result of many other things. We don’t just have to see this season. I think he has always played very well on clay.

“Nobody talks about last year, but he had a great season on grass. Better than mine because he won Queens. He reached the Wimbledon semi-finals. So he’s a complete player.

“I’m happy for him because, in my opinion, he’s someone who deserves it. He is a good guy. He’s grown a lot off the court too, and he seems very calm at the end moment, and he deserves it.

“He’s so talented, he has put a lot of order into his game and mentally on the court. And he’s improved a lot, he’s got people around him who definitely help him, and so I hope he goes very, very far. Not just here in this tournament, but in all the others.

“And as an Italian, the more Italians we have in the top 10, in the top five, hopefully, he can get there, the better. So let’s hope that after Musetti, someone else arrives, and so we are in a nice little train, all together. But he is playing good tennis and I’m happy.”

Lorenzo Musetti’s impressive 2025 clay season

Musetti hit the ground running at the first Masters 1000 clay event of the season in Monte Carlo, earning statement victories against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alex de Minaur to advance to the final, where he met Alcaraz.

He took the first set against the four-time Grand Slam champion, but the Spaniard proved too much for Musetti in the end.

After withdrawing from the Barcelona Open, the former Wimbledon semi-finalist made it to the final four of the Madrid Open, before bowing out to a red-hot Jack Draper.

In Rome, Musetti made it to the semi-finals once more, but again came up against Alcaraz, who beat him in straight sets.

He now has the chance to build on his impressive Masters 1000 results in the fourth round of Roland Garros, as he continues his pursuit of a maiden Grand Slam title.
