The reigning world number two Jannik Sinner is one of the most in-form players in the world right now.

The 22-year-old has continued his incredible run of form in the Madrid Open where he has booked his place in the quarter-final after beating Karen Khachanov 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday.

With that win Sinner has now set up a last-eight clash against Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime, who booked his place in the quarterfinals after beating Norway’s in-form Casper Ruud in straight sets.

Jannik Sinner reveals how difficult it was to face Felix Auger Aliassime two years back

And Sinner, while talking to the Tennis Channel, has now recalled how difficult it was to face the 23-year-old two years back at the same venue.

“I played against Felix two years ago and then he completely killed me,” he said.

“I remember we played on court three and I had no chance. So he loves the conditions here. He is a huge server. So in any case it’s going to be a tough match. Whoever I have to play against, I try to prepare it in the best possible way.”

Jannik Sinner and Felix Auger Aliassime’s head to head record

In the aforementioned match, which took place in 2022, Sinner was comprehensively beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Auger Aliassime but they are in very different places as players now.

Sinner is undoubtedly going through the best phase of his professional career and has elevated himself right to the top of the game.

Indeed, the only real question mark over him Sinner at the minute is whether his injury problems will be kept at bay.

The 22-year-old won the Australian Open earlier this year and has backed that up with continued success, with another two tournament victories already in 2024.

Auger Aliassime’s progress, on the other hand, has been more modest. In 2022, he was ranked inside the top 10, but he has dropped all the way down to 35th in the world.

Interestingly though, Auger Aliassime does lead the head to head between the pair, with the Canadian having won both their previous matches and it will be interesting to see whether the rapidly improving Sinner can end that losing streak this week.
