Jannik Sinner sets new ATP record after beating Taro Daniel at the Shanghai Masters

Jannik Sinner is up and running at the Shanghai Masters and he set a new ATP record in the process.

The Italian arrived in Shanghai less than 24 hours after losing an enthralling China Open final against Carlos Alcaraz in Beijing.

Following their three-hour contest, both players were given an additional day to rest and prepare before beginning their quest for another Masters 1000 title.

But Sinner looked very fresh as he cruised through his opening match against Taro Daniel, which he won 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 17 minutes.

What new record did Jannik Sinner set at the Shanghai Masters?

Jannik Sinner moved his record in opening round matches this season to 14 wins and no defeats with a win over Daniel, who has not won back-to-back matches since January.

The 23-year-old has also won his last 51 matches against players ranked outside the ATP’s top 20 since Dusan Lajovic beat him at the Cincinnati Open last year.

But Sinner broke new ground after claiming his 250th career win on Saturday, and he is the first player born in the 2000s to reach this landmark.

Furthermore, Sinner is currently on track to surpass his record of 64 wins from 2023, which is the highest number registered by an Italian man in the Open Era.

What did Jannik Sinner say about his Shanghai Masters performance?

Sinner has reached the next round of the Shanghai Masters and will play the tournament’s 31st seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry.

The World number one was impressed with his performance against Daniel, especially given his exploits in China just three days ago.

“I felt quite comfortable today,” Sinner told ATP Media. “I feel in good shape also physically, which is very important for me.

“Of course I will try to improve for tomorrow’s performance, but today I was serving really, really well, especially in important moments, and was moving well.”

Should SInner defeat Etcheverry, he could be in line for a Shanghai rematch against Ben Shelton, who beat him in the Chinese city a year ago.
