Jannik Sinner has finally returned to competitive tennis, with the world number one set to take on the Italian Open.

Carlos Alcaraz was the last player to beat Sinner, who is about to make his comeback from a three-month suspension.

Sinner is doing ‘pretty well’ ahead of his return, which comes on home soil in Rome at the ATP Masters 1000 event.

He is the top seed at the Italian Open, and starts off in the second round after being handed a bye in round one.

Sinner has remained top of the ATP rankings despite his absence, with Alexander Zverev occupying second place.

What happened to Jannik Sinner when he started training again

The 23-year-old has now been speaking to the media ahead of his return, with Sinner ramping up his training ahead of the Italian Open.

“At the beginning it had been a long time since I went so long without touching the racket, that’s why we went more or less without touching them,” he said.

“Then we started really slowly, because as soon as we pushed a little more the blisters came out on my hands.

“That was a whole sensation that I had not felt for a long time. But in the other direction I’m happy with how things went.

“If immediately on the first day when I had time again to go on the court, we didn’t have this huge rush that one or two days will change our lives because in any case it takes time. But let’s say I’m happy with how everything went.”

What is Jannik Sinner’s potential route to the Italian Open final?

Sinner may not be focusing on actually winning the Italian Open, with a strong run in Rome perhaps not his top priority right now.

He may instead be focused on playing good tennis and staying fit and healthy, particularly with the French Open rapidly approaching.

But given the fact that he won the Australian Open before his ban and his recent training efforts, there is every chance he can clinch more success at his first event back.

Moreover, he is also in the opposite half of the draw to Alcaraz, who he may not meet until the final should he make it that far.
