Jannik Sinner says if he agrees with Carlos Alcaraz about changing the Davis Cup format

With the 2025 finals right around the corner, several top players have weighed in with their thoughts on the future of the Davis Cup.

On Thursday, ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi argued for the Davis Cup to become a two-year event, and for the tournament to reintroduce home-and-away ties.

When asked about Gaudenzi’s idea in his latest press conference at the ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz seemed to agree, suggesting that the two-year format could encourage more players to participate.

After Jannik Sinner beat Ben Shelton in his final group stage match at the year-end championships, the same question was posed to him.

Jannik Sinner is in favor of a two-year ‘real’ Davis Cup

During his latest press conference, Sinner gave his verdict on the proposed changes to the Davis Cup.

“The Davis Cup is a very interesting topic. Every player has their own opinion,” he said.

“What I would like, what I could see potentially in the future, is having Davis Cup throughout two years, so you can also set up the semifinals at the beginning of the year and the final at the end of the year somewhere.

“It’s also nice where you can choose, make the coin toss, whatever, and you play in this stadium, and you sell tickets.”

Like Gaudenzi, Sinner wants to see the ‘real Davis Cup’ return, with home-and-away ties.

“Like this, if you play in Bologna, there is the matchup Australia against the USA, of course, there are going to be spectators. I’m not saying there won’t be. But at the same time, why not make it a real Davis Cup competition?” he said.

“I never unfortunately played the Davis Cup, the real Davis Cup, where it’s away, playing in Argentina or in Brazil, where you have the whole stadium not against you but for the other team. I think this is Davis Cup, you know?

“We Italians are lucky because we can play here. Also, Malaga is not far away. We have a huge number of people and support. They love tennis. People are always going to move.

“At the same time, as I said, it can happen that Australia plays against the USA next year, maybe in Bologna. You don’t have this Davis Cup feeling. This is the only thing.”

Sinner understands making such a change isn’t simple, but would be supportive of a two-year Davis Cup.

“Of course, there are many dynamics that I personally may not know,” he said.

“But yeah, I would like it to be two years, that one competition goes for two years, so you can set up big matches with great venues. It makes it even bigger.”

The 24-year-old boasts an impressive 15-4 record at the Davis Cup and is a two-time champion, winning in 2023 and 2024.

Whether he will return to represent Italy in 2026 remains to be seen, but it will certainly be something to look out for.

Italy will attempt to defend their title without Sinner when the 2025 Davis Cup Finals begin on Tuesday, November 18.
