Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have already established one of the great rivalries despite their infancy on tour.
Having only been around for a few years, it is mesmeric the speed at which they have risen up the rankings and made history in the sport.
Both have already occupied the world number one spot at some point during their short careers, and both will plan to do so again across what promises to be two supremely illustrious careers.
However, with the Spaniard having gotten the better of his 22-year-old rivalry twice now in 2024, Sinner seems well aware that something has to change to stop this mini rut.
Jannik Sinner issues warning to Carlos Alcaraz
Speaking to CNBC after his French Open exit at the hands of Alcaraz, the Italian was unsurprisingly complimentary of his young rival.
After all, despite the two having been pitted against one another due to their shared excellence at such a tender age, they actually seem to boast quite a harmonious relationship.
When facing off against one another, it is admirable how quick they are to laud each other should their opposition hit a stunning winner.

However, Sinner remains intent that the best is yet to come from him, and that their rivalry will only intensify over the years. He even claimed: ‘I’m very happy for him. It’s amazing. He makes me a better tennis player, every time when I play him and I lose I know what I have to improve.
‘Me and my team, we will work on that, and I can’t wait to play against him again. I think this makes me a better player because we have a rivalry which is a little bit different. I’m very happy to hopefully show in the future that I have improved as a player and I’m looking forward to it.’
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz could be a rivalry for the ages
Already Alcaraz and Sinner have played each other nine times on the ATP circuits, and already we have been shown why these are now the top-two ranked players in the world.
With insane athleticism and incredible shot-making, the sky really is the limit for these youngsters, who both have already won a Grand Slam title, and have both usurped Novak Djokovic both on the court and in the rankings.
Naturally, their latest clash is likely to dominate conversations regarding the two, but it is worth noting that both were visibly hampered by injuries they went into Roland Garros with.
Perhaps a better indication of their respective talents and subsequent rivalry would be their Miami Open semi-final in 2023, which saw Sinner narrowly come out on top, or their US Open semi-final in the same year, which pushed Alcaraz into the final he would then win.
These two are set to battle for the elite honours for the next decade, and as a generation set to finally be free of the big three’s reign, they will have a free run at making history together.
