Jannik Sinner has stormed into the quarterfinals of Wimbledon after beating Shintaro Mochizuki.
Playing on Centre Court, defending champion Sinner defeated the qualifier 6-3, 7-6(7-0), 6-3 after two hours and 25 minutes.
The Italian needed five sets to beat Miomir Kecmanovic in round one, but he has since claimed straight-set wins over Nuno Borges, Jenson Brooksby and now Mochizuki.
And with his fourth round victory at Wimbledon, the ATP number one has just matched an impressive feat from legendary player Pete Sampras.
Who is your favorite ATP player right now?
Jannik Sinner matches Pete Sampras at Wimbledon
After knocking out Mochizuki, Sinner is now the youngest player to reach five or more consecutive men’s singles quarterfinals at Wimbledon since Sampras.
That is according to OptaAce, with the 24-year-old following in the footsteps of a 24-year-old Sampras in 1996.
From his previous four runs to that stage, Sinner has fallen twice in the quarterfinals and once in the semifinals, as well as winning the title in 2025.
The top seed now takes on Jan-Lennard Struff in his next match at the All England Club, which he should be very confident of winning.
While neither player will be looking beyond their upcoming clash, the winner incidentally will take on either Novak Djokovic or Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semifinals.
Djokovic has won Wimbledon seven times, the same number as Sampras, with that duo second only to Roger Federer’s eight titles in the all-time list.
| Player | Titles | Years |
| Roger Federer | 8 | 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2017 |
| Novak Djokovic | 7 | 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 |
| Pete Sampras | 7 | 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 |
| Bjorn Borg | 5 | 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 |
Jannik Sinner must be very confident of beating Jan-Lennard Struff at Wimbledon
Sinner and Struff have a very one-sided head-to-head record in their careers, with the Italian having won all three of his meetings with the German.
All three matches took place during the 2024 ATP season, and were notably played on the three different surfaces.
Notably for Wimbledon, Sinner beat his rival on grass in the Halle Open quarterfinals before going on to lift the trophy.
| Year | Winner | Tournament | Round | Surface | Score |
| 2024 | Jannik Sinner | Halle | Quarterfinal | Outdoor Grass | 62 67(1) 76(3) |
| 2024 | Jannik Sinner | ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo | Round of 16 | Outdoor Clay | 64 62 |
| 2024 | Jannik Sinner | ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells | Round of 32 | Outdoor Hard | 63 64 |
Of course, providing him with extra confidence is his overall record at the All England Club, particularly that 2025 final win over Carlos Alcaraz.
His physical prowess and mental strength were on display in that battle, having come from behind to beat the Spaniard 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and win his first Wimbledon title.
