The Spanish legend lost in the semifinals of both Indian Wells and Miami, but won all three clay-court Masters tournaments that year before going on to win Roland Garros as well.

In 2011, Nadal managed five straight trips to the semifinals again, but this time he only won the Monte-Carlo Masters.

Sinner’s last defeat at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament came in Shanghai last year, where he was forced to retire in the third round due to cramping.

Jannik Sinner’s next opponent at the 2026 Italian Open

In the semifinals of the 2026 Italian Open, Sinner will take on either seventh seed Daniil Medvedev or lucky loser Martin Landaluce.

Sinner has faced Medvedev 16 times on the ATP Tour before, and holds a winning record of 9-7 against the Russian.

Their most recent bout came in the 2026 Indian Wells final, where Sinner came out on top in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6.

However, Sinner has never played 20-year-old Spaniard Landaluce, who has dropped just one set so far in his Rome campaign.
