Jannik Sinner has switched his focus to the US Open after a frustrating Cincinnati Open final with Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner was seeking a third ATP title of the season in Cincinnati, but instead it was Alcaraz who secured his sixth.
Their highly anticipated Cincinnati Open final was, however, hugely anticlimactic, with Sinner retiring due to illness.
He was trailing 5-0 in the first set, during which he called upon the doctor for treatment before retiring after 23 minutes.
Alcaraz has backed Sinner to bounce back, which the Italian will be hoping to do at this year’s US Open, which starts on Sunday.

Jannik Sinner issues public apology after Cincinnati Open final retirement
And ahead of his appearance at the hard-court Grand Slam, the world number one has shared an update on his situation.
Sinner wrote on Instagram: “Yesterday I didn’t feel great and I’m really sorry to disappoint you. Thank you so much to everyone supporting me on-site and from home, your support means the world.
“Congrats to Carlos Alcaraz and his team, you’re having an incredible season and I wish you all the best for what’s ahead. Now it’s time to rest a couple of days before getting back to work.”
Jannik Sinner can be quietly confident of US Open success despite Cincinnati disappointment
Sinner wants to recover for the US Open, where he was set to participate in the mixed doubles alongside his singles appearance.
But his illness means he has been forced to withdraw from the former along with his playing partner Katerina Siniakova.
Danielle Collins entered the US Open mixed doubles event in his place, with the American joined by compatriot Christian Harrison.
Unsurprisingly, Sinner wants to focus all of his efforts on singles, particularly given that he is the defending champion at Flushing Meadows.
And despite his disappointing end in Cincinnati, he remains in formidable form going into the Grand Slam.
Sinner has just four losses to his name all season, with the world number one having picked up 31 wins along the way.
He also just enjoyed a 26-match winning run on hard courts, which came to an end only via his own retirement.
Alcaraz will, of course, represent another real threat to Sinner in New York, but the Italian should be quietly confident of another Grand Slam title thanks to his overall form.
