Jannik Sinner marked his return to ATP Tour action with a dominant win in Vienna.

The Italian star was last seen at an official tournament at the Shanghai Masters, where a less than 100% Sinner lost to Tallon Griekspoor in the third round.

Bouncing back from injury, Sinner won the Six Kings Slam exhibition event in Saudi Arabia before travelling to Austria for the Vienna Open.

There, Sinner played Daniel Altmaier in round one, whom he beat in Shanghai just a few short weeks ago.

Picking up another convincing win, Sinner dominated Altmaier 6-0, 6-2 in 58 minutes to secure his spot in the second round of the Vienna Open.

After the match, Sinner was praised by commentator Naomi Cavaday, who was mightily impressed by his performance.

Naomi Cavaday says Jannik Sinner’s level was ‘absolutely extraordinary’ in Vienna win

Speaking to Sky Sports, Cavaday gave her verdict on Sinner’s first-round win in Vienna.

“Wow, there’s almost nothing to say because the tennis said it all,” she said.

“It was so far away, in terms of level, it was absolutely extraordinary. Every small detail was played to perfection, which meant there was no way in, not a chance for Daniel Altmaier, and that became quite clear about halfway through the first set.

“Even those adjustments, in such a short space of time, realising when he’s staying back, coming forward, changing where the return goes, getting it perfect every time, so Altmaier doesn’t even have the element of surprise.

“He had nothing to work with there whatsoever; it was completely and utterly flawless.”

Cavaday doesn’t think anyone will want to play Sinner if he maintains the level he showed against Altmaier.

“Goodness me, who wants to play Jannik Sinner right now?” she said.

“It scares me, and I don’t have to play him, I don’t want to!”

She also shared some sympathy with Altmaier, who was outclassed from start to finish in the Austrian capital.

“It’s absolutely awful to be on the receiving end of that,” said Cavaday.

“You’ve got to feel for Altmaier, that’s not going to sit well with him at all. They have had enough matches, and he’s also got a win over Sinner; they have been close before.

“Ok, he lost to him a couple of weeks ago in Shanghai, 6-3, 6-3, but it was still a competitive match.

“That was not, that was an absolute lesson, it was simply superb.”

Cavaday wasn’t the only one impressed with Sinner’s ‘superb’ performance…

Jannik Sinner was ‘very happy’ with his performance against Daniel Altmaier

During his on-court interview, Sinner shared his assessment of his fourth career meeting with Altmaier.

“I feel like the first set everything was working really well, not making barely any mistakes,” he said.

“Indoor courts, you have to be careful, because if your opponent starts to serve well, it’s very difficult to break.

“When I had the double break, I tried a couple of things, but I’m very happy with today’s performance.

“Starting the tournament in a very positive way, not only game-wise but feeling-wise, it was good, so I’m happy to be here, and let’s see what is coming in the next round.”

Sinner will meet his fellow Italian Flavio Cobolli in round two, after the 23-year-old beat Tomas Machac in his opener.

The world number two has never lost a main draw ATP match against an Italian player (16-0).

Only time will tell if Sinner can extend his winning record to 17-0 when he takes on Cobolli for a place in the quarterfinals.

Sinner will play Cobolli in the second round of the Vienna Open on Thursday, October 23.
