Everyone, from pundits to players, seems to have offered their opinion on Coco Gauff’s Australian Open racket smash. Jannik Sinner is now the latest.
It has been the overwhelming talking point of the last few days at this event, despite all the high-profile matches we have seen.
That being said, the lack of drama and real excitement throughout the entire event has likely enhanced the interest in such off-court drama.
This particular controversy stemmed from Gauff’s decision to destroy her racket behind the scenes, waiting until she was away from the court after her loss to Elina Svitolina.
However, with cameras everywhere, it was captured and spread like wildfire.
Jannik Sinner’s honest opinion on Coco Gauff’s Australian Open racket smash
The American showed remarkable restraint after such an emotional and heavy defeat, to contain her emotions until she was safely off the court.
So, it seems unfair that she has now been put on show for all the world to see.
Who is going to win the men’s Australian Open title?
Asked about the decision to smash her racket, Jannik Sinner sympathised with Coco Gauff.
He claimed: “It can happen, no? We’re athletes, we invest our whole life to be the best version of ourselves. But sometimes losses hurt. I understand the frustration as a player.
“She gives everything on court, she never says a word out of place, she’s a good girl.”
At the end of the day, he will not be too invested in this controversy, given Sinner faces Novak Djokovic next in the semi-finals.
Can Novak Djokovic really beat Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open?
Heading into this event, Sinner was the overwhelming favourite to win this title again, for a third straight year.
Since then, Carlos Alcaraz has established himself as a similar frontrunner, having already recorded his best-ever run at this event.

Djokovic, meanwhile, has been silently going about his business, having since been afforded two huge slices of luck to secure his spot in the semi-finals.
First, it was Jakub Mensik’s withdrawal before their fourth-round match, before Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire injured despite being two sets to love up in his quarter-final clash against the Serbian.
Djokovic has played just 11 sets of tennis, and yet finds himself in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam.

Luck is certainly on his side at the Australian Open this year, and he will finally get to face Sinner with a seemingly clean bill of health.
He will likely not get a better chance at securing a 25th Grand Slam title.
