Jannik Sinner assessed his tough four-set win over fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon.

The World number one was handed a nightmare draw of facing the former Wimbledon finalist as early as the second round.

But the 23-year-old found a way to battle past his compatriot in four sets and book a spot in the third round.

With the time approaching the 11pm curfew on Centre Court, Sinner produced some solid tennis to close out the hard-fought victory.

Why did Jannik Sinner think he got lucky against Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon?

Tiebreak sets should be expected with a serve as powerful as Berrettini’s, especially on grass.

Sinner opened up a two-set lead after claiming two tiebreak sets, before the 28-year-old fought back to take the third set.

The fourth set also went to a tiebreak and after Sinner completed the hat trick by taking it seven points to four following some errors from Berrettini late on. Post-match Sinner believed he was fortunate to claim all three sets via tiebreaks.

“We are very good friends, we play Davis Cup together, sometimes we practise together. It’s obviously very, very tough that we had to play each other in such an important tournament,” he said.

“It was a very high level match, I thought we both played really well. In three tie-breaks, I sometimes got a bit lucky, but I’ll take it for today.”

Who will Jannik Sinner face next?

It was a tough challenge facing a compatriot and good friend, but Sinner got the job done and moved into the Wimbledon third round.

The top seed’s next opponent is Miomir Kecmanović, who is into round three at SW19 for the second time in three years.

He needed four sets to defeat India’s Sumit Nagal in round one, and prevailed in five sets over Tallon Griekspoor, who made the Libema Open semi-finals in the lead up to Wimbledon.

This will be the pair’s first meeting since the 2022 Cincinnati Masters and Sinner goes into the clash against the Serbian having not any of their three previous matches.
