Jannik Sinner achieved a new personal milestone after reaching the Australian Open final.

The 23-year-old is now just one win away from successfully defending the title at Melbourne Park after defeating Ben Shelton in straight sets.

The World number one came from behind to clinch the first set via a tiebreak, and went on to lose just four more games for the rest of the match.

In Sunday’s final Jannik Sinner will face Alexander Zverev, who advanced to the championship match after Novak Djokovic retired from their semi-final after the first set due to injury.

Jannik Sinner breaks new ground after reaching Australian Open final

Sinner did not produce a vintage performance against Shelton, despite winning in straight sets.

He called the trainer during his semi-final and so did Shelton as they battled under the lights on Rod Laver Arena.

Sinner was suffering from cramp and seemed to be feeling his hip toward the end of the third set, but he was pleased to finish the match and win 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-2.

Following the win, Sinner has now won his last 20 matches, which is now the longest win streak of his career, beating the 19 successive wins he managed from the 2023 Davis Cup to the 2024 Indian Wells Masters.

Sinner has also now managed 20 successive Grand Slam wins on a hard court, and he is the second-youngest player in the Open Era to achieve this, the youngest being John McEnroe.

Jannik Sinner matches Pete Sampras feat after reaching Australian Open final

Sinner’s latest victory means he has advanced to his second consecutive Australian Open final.

He is the first male player to achieve this feat since Pete Sampras, who reached the championship match at Melbourne Park in 1994 and 1995.

Sampras won the 1994 title by beating Todd Martin in the final, but he lost to compatriot and rival Andre Agassi the following year.

Sinner will hope to go one better and win his second successive title at the Australian Open, but he will be given a stern test by Zverev, who is trying to win his first Grand Slam title.
