Jannik Sinner went down holding his ankle during his second-round match at the China Open.

The Italian star looked to be in some discomfort after a fall against Terence Atmane in Beijing.

Just days after his rival Carlos Alcaraz injured his ankle in Tokyo, Sinner seemed to have encountered the same problem.

Recovering just as the Spaniard did in Japan, Sinner defeated Atmane in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 to book his place in the quarterfinals.

After the match, Sinner confirmed whether he had indeed injured his ankle.

During his post-match press conference, Sinner was asked for an update on his ankle.

“No, it feels good,” he said.

“No problems, physical problems. It’s all good. Thank you.”

Sinner was made to work hard for his place in the quarterfinals as French qualifier Atmane pushed him close in Beijing.

Winning a tight first set 6-4, Sinner was then pegged back when Atmane forced a decider.

Reacting to his performance, the Italian admitted he was concerned when his opponent stepped things up in the second set.

“Well, there are always concerns. I mean, the third set can go both ways, especially with big servers. If he breaks you once early, then serves very well, so…” said Sinner.

“The match is not over until it’s over, you know? So he for sure carried a lot of confidence in the third set.

“I managed to play a great first game to break him, which then gave me the confidence to somehow manage the set. After the double break, it was a bit different. The atmosphere went down. Also, physically a bit.

“Yeah, I mean, it was a very difficult challenge today.”

Both players struggled on their serve in Beijing, breaking each other several times throughout the match.

During the second set, 16 consecutive points were won against the serve, as Sinner and Atmane broke each other to love twice in a row.

Sinner will be hoping to produce a more solid serving performance when he returns to play his quarterfinal match on Monday.

Who will Jannik Sinner play next at the China Open?

Standing between Sinner and a place in the China Open semis is Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, the world number 57.

Unlike Sinner, Marozsan has yet to drop a set in Beijing, defeating two French opponents on his way to the quarters.

Sinner and Marozsan have met once before on the ATP Tour, at the 2024 Halle Open.

There, Sinner battled through in three tight sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, to secure his spot in the quarterfinals.

He will take to the court as the favorite against Marozsan in Beijing, looking to make his way through to the semis.

Competing as the number-one seed at the China Open, Sinner is expected to win the title, but who else remains in the competition?

Top three seeds, Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur, both look to be in good shape, having performed well in their opening matches.

De Minaur, placed on the same side of the draw as Sinner, could potentially meet the world number two in the semifinals, should he beat Arthur Cazaux or Jakub Mensik.

Trailing Sinner 10-0 in the head-to-head, the Aussie will need to find another gear if he wants to pick up a maiden win over the Italian star in Beijing.

Both players will first focus on their quarterfinal matches, which will take place on Monday, September 29.
