Iga Swiatek is safely into the second round of the French Open, where she will take on Emma Raducanu.

Swiatek watched Rafael Nadal’s farewell ceremony in Paris, with the Pole then starting the defence of her French Open title.

She has lifted the trophy at Roland Garros in each of the last three years, and indeed in four of the last five.

Swiatek is among the French Open favourites, and is into round two after defeating Rebecca Sramkova in round one.

She secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory to set up a meeting with Raducanu, who overcame Wang Xinyu 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Raducanu is unseeded at the Grand Slam while Swiatek is the fifth seed, having recently fallen to fifth place in the WTA rankings.

But she has bounced back from that setback in perfect fashion, with the five-time Grand Slam champion making history in Paris.

After her latest victory, she is now the current player with the most women’s singles main draw wins at the French Open with 36, as per OptaAce.

There is further reason for Swiatek to really celebrate her latest efforts, with OptaAce also noting that only five women in the Open Era have a better record in Grand Slam opening rounds than her.

She is 24-1 in her first 25 appearances, with iconic figures Billie Jean King, Chris Evert, Evonne Goolagong, Monica Seles and Serena Williams having all posted 25-0 records.

Swiatek will be delighted with her success, but a tough test now awaits the former WTA Tour number one.

History is, however, firmly on her side, with the Pole having beaten the Briton in all four of their previous meetings.

That includes a recent Grand Slam clash, where Swiatek defeated Raducanu 6-1, 6-0 in the third round of the 2025 Australian Open.

The duo boasts six Grand Slam titles between them, with the former British number one clinching her one and only such title at the 2021 US Open.
