Iga Swiatek has continued her dream story at the Qatar Open in Doha, where she is a three-time champion.

Swiatek is chasing a fourth Qatar title this year, and she’s off to the perfect start after storming past Janice Tjen.

The top seed received a bye in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament, before defeating Tjen to reach the round of 16.

Swiatek secured another 6-0 set win in her opening match at the Qatar Open, with her efforts helping her maintain a simply stunning run.

Iga Swiatek is 72-0 in opening matches at WTA events

Hugely impressively, it has now been 72 consecutive WTA tournaments since Swiatek lost an opening match.

The run includes the WTA Finals and United Cup, with the Pole last losing her opening match against Maria Sakkari at the 2021 WTA Finals.

She said of the record: “It’s always nice to start a tournament in a solid way and I’m ready for every match. I think that’s the reason for that.

“I don’t take anything for granted, so even first rounds or second rounds, I treat them as super important matches and as a challenge. So I’m ready for it from the beginning.”

Three Qatar Open titles among Iga Swiatek’s phenomenal success

Swiatek is clearly a strong starter, but often loses that momentum as tournaments progress, as witnessed by her Australian Open quarterfinal exit.

That did, however, arrive against Elena Rybakina, who also beat the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula en route to the title.

But the Qatar Open has very much been Swiatek’s event, with the Pole lifting the trophy in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

The titles represent three of her 25 on the WTA Tour, just behind her phenomenal four triumphs at the French Open.

Currently ranked number two in the world, she is a former world number one, and has over 400 wins to her name.

Catching Sabalenka in the rankings may be on her list of priorities right now, along with the career Grand Slam.

But the six-time Grand Slam champion must wait another year to achieve that feat, needing only an Australian Open title to get over the line.
