Iga Swiatek suffered a shocking defeat to Danielle Collins in the third round of the Italian Open, losing 6-1, 7-5

The Pole’s difficult clay season continues, having fallen out of Stuttgart in the quarter-final, before Swiatek suffered a heavy defeat to Coco Gauff in the Madrid Open semi-final.

Currently the world number two, Swiatek has the option of playing in another tournament before her title defence at the French Open, with a WTA 500 in Strasbourg and a 250 in Rabat still up for grabs in May.

Swiatek is predicted to enter one more event before Roland Garros, following her third-round upset against Collins at the Italian Open, which she debriefed after the match.

Iga Swiatek says she focused on mistakes during her loss to Danielle Collins

Speaking after her defeat, Swiatek said: “I don’t know. Well, I think I just wasn’t there present to, like, fight and to compete.”

“I focused on mistakes. It’s my mistake, and I’m not doing things right, so yeah, the focus is on the wrong things from my side and I’ll try to change that.”

On her expectations for Roland Garros, she said: Obviously, (indiscernible) because I’m not able to play my game, I’ll just try to, you know, as I said, change my mindset a little bit, try to regroup and just focus day by day working.

Swiatek was asked about players in the past coming into the French Open having not played well in previous tournaments.

She responded: I don’t care what other people had. There’s no point to compare. It doesn’t matter what things I get. Every year is different, so… Doesn’t matter.”

Iga Swiatek will leave the WTA top two for the first time since 2022 after her defeat to Danielle Collins

With her streak lasting 1161 days, Swiatek will leave the WTA top two for the first time in over three years following her defeat at the Italian Open.

The five-time Grand Slam champion, who first entered the top two in March 2022, will fall to at least world number four when the new rankings are published at the end of the tournament.

Swiatek, currently on 6773 ranking points, will lose 935 points after crashing out of the Italian Open, which she won last year.

Gauff and Jessica Pegula will move to places two and three, respectively, and Jasmine Paolini will have the chance to bump Swiatek down to world number five.
