With Rafael Nadal’s career summed up mostly by domination, few opponents have managed to leave with a positive record over the 22-time major champion.

The 38-year-old’s legendary career concluded in dramatic fashion as Spain fell to the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarter-finals on an emotional evening in Malaga.

Rafael Nadal had earlier revealed that the team event would mark his final professional appearance.

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd, the Spaniard lost 6-4, 6-4 to Botic van de Zandschulp, giving the Netherlands an early lead in the tie.

Carlos Alcaraz, kept the team’s hopes alive with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 victory over Tallon Griekspoor. However, Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers were defeated in a nail-biting doubles match by Van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhof, sealing Spain’s elimination.

Despite the loss, Nadal retains a positive head-to-head record against Van de Zandschulp, having defeated him at both the French Open and Wimbledon in 2022.

Few players in history boast a winning record against Nadal, with just a select group of stars managing to remain undefeated against him.

Dustin Brown, known for his dynamic style and enormous arsenal of shots, is one of only two players, alongside Alex Corretja, with an undefeated record against Nadal over multiple encounters.

Brown, who peaked at a career-high ATP ranking of 64, shocked the tennis world twice with two remarkable wins over the Spaniard.

No stranger to a highlight-reel, Brown’s leaping volleys and crafty use of spin have cut him out as one of the sport’s most memorable showman’s.

The German-Jamaican first defeated Nadal in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) in Halle in 2014, dumping out the top seed just weeks after he’d clinched his ninth French Open title.

Brown backed this up with a stunning four-set victory over Nadal in the second round at Wimbledon the following year, producing one of the tournament’s most memorable upsets.

This loss to Brown was emblematic of Nadal’s unexpected struggles at Wimbledon, where he suffered four consecutive exits to players ranked outside the top 100 between 2012 and 2015.

Other shock defeats in this streak included Lukas Rosol in 2012, Steve Darcis in 2013, and Nick Kyrgios in 2014.

Brown also boasts an undefeated ATP record against current world number two Alexander Zverev, having defeated him in Stuttgart in 2019.

Dustin Brown has retired at the same time as Rafael Nadal

Brown announced his retirement from professional tennis at the beginning of 2024, leaving the sport at the same time as Nadal.

While Brown’s unpredictable and creative game delighted fans and brought him memorable moments, such as his famous Wimbledon victory over Nadal, the physical toll of his play style seems to have caught up with him.

After battling persistent injuries since 2018, Brown has been forced to call time on a truly unique career.

While they leave vastly different legacies – Nadal as a 22-time Grand Slam champion and Brown as an enigma, exhibiting random flashes of brilliance – their clash at Wimbledon remains a defining moment that encapsulates the unpredictability of the sport.

Both players leave the game as a result of injury, but their impact, particularly their contrasting styles and achievements, ensures their stories will endure.
