In 2022, the tennis world was taken completely by surprise, as Ash Barty announced her retirement from tennis.

Departures from sport are completely commonplace, and always offer fellow competitors, pundits and fans the chance to celebrate long and illustrious careers at the top of their respective games.

However, in this particular instance, that was not the case.

Barty was retiring, but was doing so at the age of just 25. She was coming off the back of winning the Australian Open, her third Grand Slam title, as she sat at the top of the world rankings.

It took everybody by surprise, with Rod Laver and Billie Jean King leading the eulogies for a youngster who had shockingly decided that her time in tennis was up.

Naturally, many high-profile figures rushed to celebrate what had been a supremely successful career, even if it had been just under 12 years long.

Laver, a compatriot of Barty’s, was arguably the biggest name to celebrate her successes, although he expressed his surprise and regret.

Who will be the biggest disappointment at the 2026 Australian Open?

He wrote: “Dear Ash, news of your tennis retirement has stunned the world. You march to your own drum with humility and a beaming smile. You are a winner in every sense and I admire you greatly. I wish you great happiness and health”

King would follow that up by adding: “Australia has a rich history in tennis, and @ashbarty has represented it so well.

“I have no doubt she will continue to inspire and make a positive difference in the world. I wish her all the best in this next chapter of her life.”

This news certainly shocked another American tennis legend, as Chris Evert’s prediction about Barty’s career, made just after that Australian Open triumph, was instantly proven wrong.

Who are the current top-ranked Australian players?

Barty’s retirement was nearly four years ago now, and Australian tennis is yet to really recover from her bombshell.

Particularly on the women’s side, there is a frustrating lack of depth in talent, and it feels like there are very few, if any, who could compete for Grand Slam titles.

Naturally, on the ATP Tour, Alex de Minaur stands out above the rest.

He currently sits fifth in the world rankings, but has yet to make it past the quarter-finals of a major.

Nick Kyrgios is the most recent Aussie to reach a Grand Slam final, but has been injured almost ever since that miraculous Wimbledon run in 2021.

Alexei Popyrin did win a Masters 1000 title in 2024, but his poor form has since seen him drop out of the top 50 this year.

The highest-ranked Australian woman is Maya Joint, who does boast a promising future at just 19 years of age. She is closely followed by Daria Kasatkina, who changed her nationality from Russian to Australian earlier this year.
