Beating Lorenzo Musetti in his third round-robin match at the ATP Finals, Carlos Alcaraz secured his place as the 2025 year-end number one.
Travelling to Turin, Alcaraz knew that if he went unbeaten in his group, he’d finish the year ranked number one in the world, regardless of what his closest rival, Jannik Sinner, was able to do.
The pair look to be on a collision course for the final, although that won’t affect the world rankings, with Alcaraz guaranteeing himself the year-end number one spot for the second time in his career.

A win for Sinner could keep the gap close, however, which may leave some questioning whether he’d have finished 2025 on top without his three-month suspension earlier this year.
But just how many points did Alcaraz gain on his rival, while the Italian was out of action?
Carlos Alcaraz gained over 2,000 points when Jannik Sinner was suspended
Sinner was suspended from tennis for three months, missing several events between the Australian Open and the Italian Open.
During that period, Alcaraz won two titles on tour, accumulating over 2,000 points.
Carlos Alcaraz’s ATP Tour results during Jannik Sinner’s suspension
- Rotterdam Open – Winner (500 points)
- Qatar Open – Lost in QF (100 points)
- Indian Wells – Lost in SF (400 points)
- Miami Open – Lost in 2R (30 points)
- Monte-Carlo Masters – Winner (1,000 points)
- Barcelona Open – Finalist (330 points)
- Total – 2,360 points
If you were to add the same number of points to Sinner’s tally, he’d be the one finishing 2025 as the world number one…

Therein lies the question: Is Alcaraz really the best player in the world?
Is Jannik Sinner currently the best player in the world?
It is, of course, impossible to know exactly how many points Sinner would have earned had he not been suspended.
However, looking at Sinner’s efforts in 2024, between the Australian Open and the Italian Open, it certainly paints an interesting picture…
Jannik Sinner’s ATP Tour results in 2024 between Australian Open and Italian Open
- Rotterdam Open – Winner (500 points)
- Indian Wells – Lost in SF (400 points)
- Miami Open – Winner (1,000 points)
- Monte-Carlo Masters – Lost in SF (400 points)
- Madrid Open – Lost in QF (200 points)
- Total – 2,500 points
During the period Sinner was suspended in 2025, he had accumulated 2,500 points a year earlier.
There’s certainly an argument to suggest that Sinner would have finished as world number one had he played a full year on tour.
He won’t want to dwell on the disappointment, however, as he now turns his attention to the semifinals of the 2025 ATP Finals.
Who will Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz play in the 2025 ATP Finals semifinals?
Alcaraz will play the Bjorn Borg group runner-up in the semifinals.
With Sinner winning the group and Ben Shelton finishing bottom, it will be either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Alexander Zverev taking on the world number one.

Sinner, on the other hand, already knows his semifinal opponent and is preparing for his 13th career meeting with Alex de Minaur.
