Emma Raducanu has added Mark Petchey to her coaching team as she prepares for Indian Wells.

Indian Wells returns to the calendar early next month, and is immediately followed by the Miami Open, another WTA 1000 event.

Raducanu last played at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she lost her opening match to Antonia Ruzic.

She will soon turn her focus to Indian Wells, with Petchey back among her coaching setup after she parted ways with Francisco Roig.

After losing in the second round of the Australian Open, Raducanu split with Roig, bringing an end to their six-month partnership.

Since then, her hitting partner Alexis Canter has also been acting as her coach, and will sit in her box during matches at Indian Wells as that key pairing continues.

But Petchey will also be present, joining Raducanu on court for her practice sessions, as well as fulfilling his broadcast commitments with Tennis Channel.

He has returned to her team on an informal basis, having worked with Raducanu for four months in 2025 before she appointed Roig in August.

The coaching setup has been reported by The Times, which added that it is unclear if the new arrangement could extend beyond the first part of the famous Sunshine Double.

Emma Raducanu continues consistency struggles in 2026

It is definitely a smart move from Raducanu to hire Petchey, who has fantastic experience that should really help her behind the scenes.

Again, however, it is seemingly a short-term solution to a long-term problem, with the Briton having quite simply experienced far too many coaching changes at the age of 23.

That inconsistency off the court has been mirrored by inconsistency on it, typified by her 6-6 record for the current season.

After an early exit at the Australian Open, she reached the final of the Transylvania Open, but then Raducanu retired ill during her first match in Qatar.

It’s really been the story of her remarkable career so far, which is epitomized by her only WTA title having arrived at the 2021 US Open.

She has come close to another title, but one at Indian Wells or the Miami Open seems a long way away right now for the current world number 25.

A permanent coach is undoubtedly a step towards more consistency, but Petchey doesn’t look like being that person due to his broadcast duties.

Unfortunately, injuries have definitely played a part in her lack of success too, with Raducanu really deserving of a clean run of tournaments.

Like the constant coaching changes, such struggles won’t have done her confidence any favors, but hope should remain that she will soon find the perfect mentor to help her get back to her very best once more.
