Holger Rune reveals the ‘small adjustments’ that could see him rival Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in 2025

Holger Rune is one of the most exciting players in the game but suffered a disappointing 2024 for his lofty expectations.

The Dane broke into the top 10 for the first time after winning the 2022 Paris Masters and then following two more Masters Finals and two Grand Slam Quarter-Finals reached a career-high ranking of Number Four but has since slipped to Number 13.

Speaking to tennis365 following his appearance at the UTS Grand Slam Final in London where he lost to Alex De Minaur, Rune made a claim regarding his challenge to World Number One Jannik Sinner and French Open and Wimbledon Champion Carlos Alcaraz as he seeks a return to the top of the game.

Rune had previously spoken about forming a new ‘Big 3’ with Sinner and Alcaraz and following on from his defeat to De Minaur, he claimed that he didn’t need to change much in order to get to the next level and challenge the pair in 2025.

He said: “It’s not like a need to change everything in my game. It’s just small adjustments. I worked on some things in the exhibition event with Casper (Ruud) [the 2024 Nordic Battle held at the beginning of December] and I am working on them here at UTS as well.

“You look at someone (Alexander) Zverev and he is a guy who improved a lot lately. Before his injury, he was top five consistently, but he has improved again now and will be a big contender for the Grand Slams next year.

“That’s what I want to do as well now. My next step is not to win a particular tournament. It’s just to maximise my potential and I believe if I can do that, I can win Grand Slams.”

Rune speaks on Sinner and Alcaraz success

Sinner enjoyed an exceptional 2024 season, winning eight titles including his first two Grand Slams at the Australian Open and the US Open as well as reaching World Number One for the first time.

Alcaraz captured his first French Open title in June before successfully defending his Wimbledon title making him the second youngest man after Bjorn Borg to win four Grand Slam titles.

When asked how the pair have managed to separate themselves from the rest, Rune said:

“I think Sinner has been a very complete player this year. Then when Alcaraz is playing his best tennis, he also seems complete, but at the same time, I can see that they can improve in some areas. That’s unbelievable when you think Sinner this year won almost everything.

“The great thing about tennis is everyone always has a chance to get better. Alcaraz has been great for tennis. He’s a great player, has a lot of skills and he is showing his skills on the court. Hopefully I will be there with them soon.”
