Holger Rune must continue his search for a maiden Grand Slam success elsewhere after suffering a shock first round exit at Wimbledon.

ATP number eight Rune was the eighth seed at Wimbledon, but suffered a shock defeat to Nicolas Jarry on Court 3.

World number 143 Jarry upset the favourite for the match with a 4-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory after three hours and 33 minutes.

A question mark lingered over Rune before Wimbledon, and the Dane will now want to put the tournament behind him as soon as possible.

However, his post-match comments stole the headlines, with Rune criticised by tennis fans for suggesting he would have beaten Jarry if not for a knee injury.

He commented: “In normal conditions, I’d beat him nine times out of ten, with all due respect to Nicolas Jarry. “Obviously, I didn’t have it easy today with my knee, but yes, it wasn’t a great match.”

The story has now taken another twist, with former world number four Rune sharing an update on his injury on social media.

He wrote on X: “Not a happy ending for me on the grass this year. Will have my knee checked and keep you updated. Good luck Jarry for the rest of Wimbledon.”

Rune has enjoyed a fantastic career so far, with the 22-year-old having secured five titles on the ATP Tour.

But a grass title has yet to be clinched at this stage, with the Dane winning three times on clay and twice on hard courts.

He did, however, manage to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon in 2023, which represents his joint-best Grand Slam finish.

Rune has also reached that stage of the French Open on two occasions, but now has an injury to contend with at a key stage of the season.

His latest result meanwhile was significant for more reasons than one, with the all-time record for the most seeds to lose in round one of the Grand Slam equalled.

Whether Rune would have beaten Jarry fully fit will never be known at this moment in time, but one certainty is that it was a very confident claim.

The Chilean made it through qualifying at Wimbledon to pull off the major upset, with Learner Tien now awaiting him in round two.
