Holger Rune was a player once tipped to be the next big thing in tennis, but thus far it’s fair to say that he has failed to live up to that potential.

That’s not to suggest that he could not one day realise it, being still just 21 years old, but with Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz having way surpassed him now, he faces a tough task to catch back up to the other stars from within his age category.

He still remains of huge interest though, and has the game to trouble any player on any given day.

It is this explosivity and unpredictability that likely helps him retain this status, and also makes him a big draw for sponsors, who see the vision of how far he could go.

And yet, despite that, rumours have persisted suggesting he could be set to lose one big endorsement.

Holger Rune confirms his sponsorship future

A player’s brand deals are crucial in the modern age, where despite the prize money on offer being huge, what they can earn off the court is arguably even greater.

Holger Rune is one such athlete who benefits from this, having been a Nike athlete ever since making his professional debut in 2020.

This constant association marks a show of faith from the sporting powerhouse, but they too are still waiting for this explosion in his career to occur.

So, with his form faltering and success in short supply, one account would take to X to speculate: ‘Been speaking with a few insiders and looks like Holger Rune is done with Nike. Look for a new sponsor to debut at the US Open potentially.’

Well, Rune was quick to shut down these rumours, replying: ‘Don’t know who these insiders are, but they are not very good at their job I can tell you that. I am very happy with my Nike collaboration’.

Funnily enough, despite his absence at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Rune still commented on Casper Ruud’s Norway kit, continuing his relation to this specified area of the sport.

Nike could have the top three male tennis players had Holger Rune kicked on

Should Rune come to fulfil his potential in the coming years, Nike may well have bet on the three correct horses early on in their careers.

After all, as well as the Danish superstar, they also are the proud sponsors of Alcaraz and Sinner, two Grand Slam champions and the two of the top three ranked players on the ATP tour.

This duo are set to dominate the sport for the foreseeable future, and have already made great strides in reaffirming this plan early on, but for Rune, their emergence is bad news.

As if he didn’t have it hard enough trying to overcome the generation of Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud, now he has players his own age who are both seemingly destined for greatness.

Hopefully, this increased competition can see him up his level to theirs, and maybe hand Nike a monopoly in the tennis game.
