Marketa Vondrousova was looking to pull off an upset against the world number one in the quarterfinals.
Stunning Jasmine Paolini and Elena Rybakina in back-to-back matches, the 2023 Wimbledon champion advanced to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in over a year.
Scheduled to play Aryna Sabalenka in the last eight, Vondrousova was going to be up against it on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Mentally, Vondrousova was no doubt more than up for the challenge, but unfortunately for the Czech star, her physical health let her down once again.
Withdrawing hours before her US Open quarterfinal match, Vondrousova has now confirmed why she pulled out.
Marketa Vondrousova confirms she picked up an injury in the US Open fourth round
Posting an update to her fans on Instagram, the 26-year-old shared the reasons behind her withdrawal.
“It breaks my heart that I can’t step on court today at the US Open because of the injury I picked up in my last match,” she said.
“This place is so special to me – exactly one year ago, I was in surgery, not even sure if I would ever return.
“Being back here, competing again, and enjoying such beautiful matches has meant more than words can say.

“Thankful for all the love and support.”
Vondrousova underwent surgery on her shoulder in August 2024, which saw her miss the US Open.
Returning to the tour in Adelaide, the Czech star picked up another injury, which led to her withdrawal from the 2025 Australian Open.
Making her long-awaited return to Grand Slam tennis in Paris, Vondrousova picked up where she left off.
Refusing to give in, despite various injury problems, Vondrousova managed to score seven wins at major tournaments in 2025.

Unable to fight for win number eight, Vondrousova was forced to withdraw from the 2025 US Open due to a knee injury.
Going into further detail about her injury, the Czech star released a statement via the US Open.
“I am sorry to announce that I have to withdraw from my quarterfinal match this evening due to a knee injury,” said Vondrousova.
“I tried my best to take the court today, but during the warm-up I felt again my knee and after consultation with the tournament doctor decided not to risk aggravating the injury.
“I appreciate all the support this tournament and apologize to the fans who were looking forward to the match. I had an amazing time here in NY and can’t wait to be back next year.”
Vondrousova is already looking ahead to the 2026 US Open, but will we see her compete elsewhere on the WTA Tour in 2025?
Where is Marketa Vondrousova next scheduled to appear?
The former Grand Slam champion is next scheduled to appear at the China Open in Beijing.
However, with the event beginning in just 20 days, it’s unclear whether the world number 60 will be fit to compete.

Vondrousova has never won a match at the China Open [0-1], so could well choose to make her return elsewhere.
She may even decide to finish the season early and rest up fully ahead of her 2026 campaign.
With the number of injuries she has dealt with over the past 18 months, it wouldn’t make sense for her to rush back onto the tour.
It remains to be seen where Vondrousova will compete next, but it’ll certainly be worth looking out for.
