Grigor Dimitrov looked on course for a huge Wimbledon upset when he suffered a heartbreaking injury on Centre Court.

When Dimitrov and Jannik Sinner took to Centre Court for their fourth-round match at Wimbledon, many predicted a routine win for the world number one.

The Bulgarian had other ideas, storming into a two-set lead, leaving the Italian on the brink of a shock Wimbledon exit.

However, when holding serve at 2-2 in the third set, disaster struck, as Dimitrov injured his pectoral muscle, forcing him to retire from the match.

Set for a spell on the sidelines, the 34-year-old faces a race against time, with the US Open just six weeks away.

A former Grand Slam doubles champion has now shared whether he believes Dimitrov will be fit to compete in New York.

Stephen Huss would be ‘shocked’ to see Grigor Dimitrov return from injury at the US Open

Appearing as a guest on the latest episode of ‘The Tennis’, 2005 Wimbledon doubles champion Stephen Huss gave his verdict on Dimitrov’s injury.

“I’d be shocked if he’s back for the US Open. US Open is only six weeks away, I’d be shocked if he’s back for that,” he said.

“That’s awful, 34 years old, he’s an amazing tennis player.

“I don’t know how many times you can come back from injuries. He’s certainly done it a few times, but to have to retire from five Slams in a row, I’ve never heard of that.

“That’s horrible.”

Dimitrov has now retired from five consecutive Grand Slam events, a horrific streak that is scarcely believable.

On two occasions, at the French Open and Wimbledon this year, Dimitrov was leading when forced to retire, as injuries continue to scupper his chances at Grand Slam glory.

According to reports from TennisKafe, Dimitrov suffered a partial tear of his pectoralis major muscle against Sinner.

The recovery time for such an injury varies from several weeks to months, giving him a chance to return in time for the US Open.

With the tournament 44 days away, there’s still a good chance we will see the Bulgarian veteran entertain fans in New York later this year.

Grigor Dimitrov’s record at the US Open

Dimitrov hasn’t missed a US Open tournament since he made his debut at Flushing Meadows in 2011.

Winning 60% of his matches at the event, Dimitrov has passed the fourth round on two occasions, reaching the quarterfinals in 2024 and the semifinals in 2019.

His run in 2019 was particularly impressive, as he eased into the quarterfinals, where he secured one of the biggest wins of his career.

Standing between Dimitrov and a maiden US Open semifinal was five-time champion Roger Federer, who had won their previous six meetings.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the Swiss star who took the early lead, winning the first set 6-3 on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Not prepared to give up without a fight, the Bulgarian leveled the tie at one set apiece, clinching the second, 6-4.

Sharing the next two sets, Dimitrov and Federer’s quarterfinal tie required a decider, as both players gave it their all with a place in the semis up for grabs.

Taking his game to another level, Dimitrov won the fifth set 6-2, advancing to the last four, securing his sole career win over the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

It was there that his run would come to an end, however, as Dimitrov fell in straight sets to Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

He has yet to return to the semis, but came close in 2024, retiring injured down two sets to one against Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals.

Dimitrov will no doubt hope to be back fit for this year’s tournament, where he can try to make another deep run in New York.

The 2025 US Open is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 24.
