Grigor Dimitrov’s Wimbledon campaign ended in heartbreak when he retired from his fourth-round match with Jannik Sinner due to injury.

Dimitrov was two sets up against Sinner in their clash, and was closing in on a huge upset, but injured his pectoral muscle while holding serve at 2-2 in the third set.

The retirement marked the fifth consecutive Grand Slam event the Bulgarian has had to withdraw from midway through the tournament.

Just days after suffering the injury at Wimbledon, Dimitrov has sent an emotional message to fans on social media.

Dimitrov took to Instagram to say: “Sometimes the heart wants to keep going… but the universe has a different plan for us.

“Having to withdraw from this match at Wimbledon was one of the most painful moments of my career.

“Thank you for the overwhelming wave of love, from family, friends, fans, colleagues, to the entire tennis community… your messages have genuinely lifted me through these hard times.

Thank you all. Truly. Recovery starts now. I’ll see you all soon. G.”

Grigor Dimitrov’s Wimbledon campaign up until his injury

Dimitrov was enjoying an impressive campaign at Wimbledon up until his retirement, dropping just one set en route to the fourth round.

He won his first round match in straight sets against Yoshihito Nishioka and emerged victorious against Corentin Moutet in round two.

After another win against Sebastian Ofner, the 34-year-old was tasked with the world number one.

He got off to the best start possible against Sinner, winning the first two sets 6-3, 7-5, and was looking comfortable in the third before his body ultimately gave up on him.
