Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard makes tennis history after beating Ben Shelton in the Swiss Indoors Basel final

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has continued his stunning rise after beating Ben Shelton to win the Swiss Indoors Basel.

Shelton was flying high at the Swiss Indoors Basel, with the American having beaten the likes of top seed Andrey Rublev and Arthur Fils en route to the final.

But Shelton finally met his match in Mpetshi Perricard, with the Frenchman winning their Swiss Indoors Basel clash 6-4, 7-6(7-4).

Mpetshi Perricard expected an emotional final with Shelton, with the latter having beaten high-profile names such as Holger Rune and Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The Frenchman, standing at 6’8”, fired home 22 aces to secure his first ATP 500 title without dropping serve all week.

He has risen a huge 19 places from 50th to 31st in the ATP Tour rankings following his success in Switzerland.

And as per the ATP website, he has also made tennis history, with Mpetshi Perricard now the lowest-ranked champion since Basel became a tour-level event back in 1975.

Sixth-seed Shelton was undoubtedly confident of clinching the Swiss Indoors Basel trophy after his fantastic run to the final.

But fellow youngster Mpetshi Perricard had other plans, with the 21-year-old beating the 22-year-old in 87 minutes.

The Frenchman now has two tour-level titles to his name, having won an ATP 250 title in Lyon earlier this year.

His remarkable rise is epitomised by the fact he started the year sitting 205th in the ATP rankings, with Mpetshi Perricard now boasting a career-high 31st ranking.

Shelton meanwhile has risen four places to 19th following his run to the Swiss Indoors Basel final, with both players now already set to turn their attention to this week’s Paris Masters.
