Jessica Pegula enjoyed a remarkable run at the US Open, reaching the final before losing a closely contested affair to Aryna Sabalenka.
Pegula proved a bit of a surprise package at Flushing Meadows. Prior to reaching the final this time around, she’d never been beyond the quarter-final at a Grand Slam event.
The world number three is currently riding the crest of a wave. She is playing extremely good tennis and at 30 she will concede that her chances of claiming a slam look slimmer with each passing year.
Pegula has come in for her background. She comes from a wealthy family and some have suggested that it’s the reason for her success when it comes to professional tennis.

Eugenie Bouchard defends Jessica Pegula after US Open claims
Fans can be seriously cynical and it’s hard to understand that some people have been hating on Pegula after her greatest run at a Grand Slam event.
Some have critiqued her for having a wealthy background and that does feel a little bit harsh considering it’s hardly seen her dominate the world of tennis.
After some fans had been less than glowing about Pegula, one fan defended her by saying: “I don’t get why Jessica Pegula gets hated because she is the daughter of and comes from a wealthy family. She seems down to earth and fun person and worked her ass off to climb in the rankings. Just like every player. You can’t buy talent and work ethic.”
Bouchard – the finalist at Wimbledon in 2014 – has jumped to the defence of Pegula, replying to the post in question with, “Money can’t buy a US Open final lol.”
Pegula can take a lot of heart from US Open run
Unfortunately for the 30-year-old, she came up against a bang in form Sabalenka in the final this time at the US Open but a lot can be taken from this tournament.
The New York native would have loved to claim a Grand Slam title for the very first time but she will take confidence into the major tournaments next year.
Pegula has never gone beyond the quarter-final of any of the other three Grand Slams and it would have been ideal for her to tick one off here.
The American star has won six career titles and at number three in the world, she should get some favourable draws that allow her to go deep in the majors next year.
Bouchard is right to defend Pegula and it’s unfair to say that she hasn’t worked hard to get to where she is on the tour today.
