Former tennis player Garbine Muguruza made the tough choice of choosing who she believes is the greatest male tennis player of all time.
The debate between the legendary trio of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic is one that will rage on for years to come.
Three icons all competing against one another in their prime and raising the standard of tennis simultaneously is something rarely seen in sport.
They pushed one another to their limit as they battled for the honour of being the player with the highest number of Grand Slam tiles.
Many have their say on who they believe to be the greatest and now Muguruza, a major winner in her own right, has joined the conversation.
Who does Garbine Muguruza think is the best male tennis player?
Muguruza played professional tennis from 2012 to 2024 and during that time Federer, Nadal and Djokovic were winning multiple titles and producing some of tennis’ greatest matches.
She knows all about facing all-time greats having come up against and beaten Serena and Venus Wlliams to win both her Grand Slam titles.
After tuning hard about her decision, the 30-year-old explained why she named Djokovic as tennis’ best player. “The Big Three has left everything so high that winning three Grand Slams sounds like little. It’s a tragedy,” she told Spanish radio programme El Larguero.
“That generation is very tough, it was always the three of them. I am from Roger, I am pro Rafa to death. I think Djokovic is a tennis beast.
“In terms of quality in tennis, the best is Novak. On the court, it is true that he has that Serbian, eastern personality. I like all three of them.”
When did Garbine Muguruza retire from tennis?
In April Muguruza announced her shock retirement from tennis having not played since January 2023.
“Tennis has given me a lot in this first part of my life. It has been a fantastic journey in which I have experienced unique situations,” she said at the time. “I have travelled all over the world and experienced many different cultures.
“I am tremendously grateful to all the people who have helped and accompanied me throughout this chapter, because without them I would not have been able to get here.”
The Spaniard is still involved in tennis and on Wednesday she was named the Tournament Director of the WTA Finals in Riyadh in November.
“I feel very privileged to be able to contribute to the future of this great sport as Tournament Director of the WTA Finals Riyadh,” Muguruza said.” I’m excited to work with a great team to present a showcase for women’s tennis that not only grows tennis but encourages all fans, and especially girls and women, to pursue their dreams.”
