Choosing the greatest participants in any sport is open to debate and in tennis, there are a number of players who are often thrown into the mix.
When it comes to the men there are a number of discussions to be had. Plenty tend to prefer the technical brilliance of Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer, with the longevity of Novak Djokovic seeing him in the mix too.
All three have won 20 or more Grand Slam titles and there really isn’t a right or wrong answer when it comes to picking the greatest tennis player of all time.
On Sunday morning, current ATP Tour player Gael Monfils did a question and answer on social media and he delivered his verdicts on who the best players of all time are.

Gael Monfils picks greatest male and female tennis players of all time
When it comes to the male greatest of all-time, Monfils appeared to have a tough time picking who he fancied.
He basically implied any of the big three on X and he might be forgiven for having splinters in his backside with this level of fence-sitting.
Monfils was also quizzed on what the tour was like with players such as Nadal retiring in recent months, confessing that it felt a little bit strange.
Monfils has hinted that he prefers Federer when it comes to the big three, suggesting that he likes the Swiss player’s ability to adapt to different situations.
He wrote on social media:
When it comes to the women’s greatest player to ever hold a racket and his pick goes to Serena Williams.
The American performer is conclusively the best player to ever play the women’s game and her power made the younger Williams sister a box-office viewing.
Monfils only named Serena when discussing the greatest players to ever play tennis and he certainly didn’t sit on the fence when it came to naming the best woman.
Monfils has awful record vs big three players
The French performer has been as high as number six in the world during his career but right now he’s ranked at 55.
At 38, his chances of winning a major title look to be over but he can still reflect on a solid career when he does call it quits.
His record against the big three hasn’t been great and as a result, it’s perhaps not surprising that he can’t really choose between the three players.
| Player | Won | Lost |
| Novak Djokovic | 0 | 19 |
| Roger Federer | 4 | 10 |
| Rafael Nadal | 2 | 14 |
It can prove really difficult to choose who is the best player ever and it has to be said that in terms of major titles, Djokovic does lead the way with 24.
However, lots of different factors needing taking into consideration and it really is a subjective decision.
Monfils has been a likeable member of the tour for a number of years and he will hope to win more matches than he loses next year when things get underway.
