Frances Tiafoe secured the fourth ATP title of his career after defeating Taylor Fritz to win the Halle Open.

Tiafoe beat fifth seed Fritz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to capture his second grass-court crown, following his 2023 Stuttgart triumph.

The American enjoyed an incredible campaign in Halle, during which he earned three top ten victories.

Frances Tiafoe becomes first American player to win Halle Open

On Sunday, Tiafoe became the first US man ever to win the Halle Open men’s singles title.

Prior to his win, the closest to achieving the feat was Mardy Fish, who made the final in 2004 before falling to Roger Federer.

Tiafoe also finally ended his long losing streak against Fritz by beating his compatriot for the first time in 10 years.

His most recent win over Fritz before this season came at the 2016 Indian Wells Open, when the pair of stars were both teenagers.

Since then, Fritz had dropped just four sets against Tiafoe across seven matches, including the 2024 US Open semifinals.

Frances Tiafoe set to re-join ATP top 20 after Halle Open win

Tiafoe collected 450 ATP points by winning the Halle Open, which has seen him move seven places up the rankings from 26th.

It means he will re-join the ATP top 20, having spent the majority of the last 12 months outside of it.

Amid a number of disappointing performances in the past year, Tiafoe’s ranking has dropped to as low as 34th in the world.

His career high is world number 10, which he clinched during the 2023 season.

Tiafoe is defending just 50 points at Wimbledon this year, meaning he can jump even further up the rankings should he go far in SW19.
