Frances Tiafoe may have won yesterday, but his Basel Open match was once again laden with officiating controversy.
After all, tennis’ new shot clock rule continues to trouble the American, who simply cannot grasp the newfound restrictions placed upon his serving.
Having complained to numerous umpires now, unsurprisingly nothing is changing.
Well, he reached boiling point yesterday straight after his first-round win.
Frances Tiafoe complains about new tennis rule
Speaking to Tennis Channel after his straight-sets win over Cam Norrie, the quality of his performance was not the topic of discussion.
Instead, it was once again an officiating controversy, given the fact that Frances Tiafoe was handed yet another time violation whilst serving.
This marked the fourth straight match where he has been dealt with such a punishment, and as was to be expected, the American wasn’t happy.
He claimed: ‘We put a lot of blood sweat and tears out here, and for me to play four consecutive matches and get four consecutive time violations is insane. It needs to be spoken about.
‘It’s loss of points, loss of money, loss of opportunity, fines that come with that because of reaction.’
The interviewer did question whether he might be able to adapt, but Tiafoe was adamant: ‘I’ll deal with it better when they make a change, right? Like I think the more I go on with it I don’t think any change will happen. Me getting four time violations in four matches is pretty ridiculous to me. I’ve been on tour ten years and that’s never happened. I just wanna know why.’
Tiafoe had to apologise for his angry outburst at one umpire in Shanghai, as he went on an expletive-laden rant after suffering from the same problem as yesterday.
How much money has Frances Tiafoe made?
Whilst frustration might be dominating Tiafoe’s headlines at the moment, it cannot be forgotten just how talented a tennis player he is.
In fact, the two-time US Open semi-finalist has enjoyed some special runs of form, thus catapulting him to worldwide fame despite only ever reaching a career-best of 10th in the world rankings.

From tennis alone, the 26-year-old’s career earnings currently sit at $12,759,166.
However, also boasting endorsements with Nike, Yonex, Tag Heuer and more, his net worth will likely be far healthier.
