The Italian Open in Rome is underway, with stars from both tours looking to add a title to their resume in the Eternal City.
The tournament has already seen some big results, including an early upset for Brazilian star João Fonseca, and a dominant opening round from Iga Swiatek.
The Italian Open is a Masters 1000 event on the ATP Tour, and a WTA 1000 level event on the women’s side.
Despite a hot start to the event, there have been some unexpected early exits, with both Petra Kvitova and Paula Badosa withdrawing from the tournament due to injury.
Another star has now joined the list after it has emerged that she can no longer compete in the Italian capital.
Karolina Muchova withdraws from the Italian Open
Former Roland Garros finalist Karolina Muchova has withdrawn from the event due to a wrist injury.
Muchova has had wrist problems in the past, having undergone surgery in February 2024, which saw her out of action until June of that year.
The Czech player had managed to stay healthy for the majority of the 2025 season, but has now withdrawn from two tournaments in a row.
The 28-year-old was scheduled to play Lucia Bronzetti in her first round match-up at the event, which she has only appeared at twice before.
Who will replace Karolina Muchova at the Italian Open?
Taking the place of Muchova at the Italian Open will be three-time doubles Grand Slam champion Luara Siegemund.
The 37-year-old lost in the qualifying stage of the tournament, but will now play Bronzetti as the lucky loser.
Siegemund has only managed to make it out of the first round once in singles events so far in the 2025 season, her sole victory coming at the Australian Open where she ultimately bowed out in the third round.
The German will hope to win an opening match-up for the first time in nearly four months, against world number 58 and Italian home hope Bronzetti.
