The US Open is right around the corner, as the stars of the ATP Tour look to finish their 2025 Grand Slam campaign on a high note.

In January, it was Jannik Sinner who won the Australian Open, picking up the first Grand Slam of the year with relative ease.

Returning to the Championship match in Paris, the Italian had points to win the title but couldn’t convert, as Carlos Alcaraz defeated Sinner 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 to clinch his second French Open crown.

Getting his revenge at SW19, Sinner beat Alcaraz in four sets to win Wimbledon, adding another Grand Slam title to his trophy cabinet.

Both players will be searching for another big win in New York next month, as will the 126 other players joining them in the main draw.

However, it has now been revealed that one player won’t be joining the 128-man field at the US Open and is set to miss another major tournament due to injury.

Matteo Berrettini withdraws from the US Open

It was announced earlier today that Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist, will miss the US Open due to injury.

The former world number six hasn’t played a match since Wimbledon, where he lost his opening match to Kamil Majchrzak in five sets.

Berrettini has struggled with several injuries over the past few years, with his abdomen causing him significant problems.

Those injuries have seen Berrettini miss six Grand Slam tournaments in the last four years, with the number now set to jump to seven.

With his injuries seemingly never-ending, Italian tennis legend Paolo Bertolucci suggested Berrettini may retire early from tennis before too long.

Unable to build any consistency with his recurring injuries, Berrettini hasn’t qualified for a Grand Slam quarterfinal since the US Open in 2022.

He’ll be devastated to have missed out on performing at Flushing Meadows in 2025, as the US Open is statistically Berrettini’s most successful major tournament.

Matteo Berrettini’s US Open record

Making seven US Open appearances throughout his career, Berrettini has won 18 matches, more than he has at the other three Grand Slams.

Matteo Berrettini’s Grand Slam record

Berrettini enjoyed his best-ever performance at the US Open in 2019, when he reached the semifinals.

Entering the tournament as the number-24 seed, Berrettini picked up several impressive wins on his way to the last four.

It was in the semifinals that his run came to an end, however, as Berrettini lost out to the eventual champion, Rafael Nadal, in straight sets.

He never returned to the semifinals, but qualified for the quarterfinals on two more occasions, in 2021 and 2022.

Unfortunately for Berrettini, he will now have to wait at least 12 months for another shot at US Open glory.

However, as is always the case in tennis, one man’s loss is another man’s gain, as Berrettini’s withdrawal frees up a main draw spot.

Who will replace Matteo Berrettini at the 2025 US Open?

Berrettini will be replaced in the main draw by American star Brandon Holt, who had originally been awarded a wild card.

Therefore, the US Open tournament organizers now have an opportunity to award that wild card to another player.

One player looks to be the perfect candidate for a wild card, having won the event back in 2016.

Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka may well have been disappointed to miss out on a wild card originally, but will surely be given the nod following Berrettini’s withdrawal.

Currently ranked 152nd in the world, the 40-year-old continues to give it his all on tour and would be a welcome addition to the US Open main draw.

Only time will tell if Wawrinka will be given the wild card, but it will certainly be something to look out for over the next few days.

The 2025 US Open is scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 24.
