Felix Auger-Aliassime is the sixth seed for this year’s Monte Carlo Masters.

But despite his impressive seeding, few have backed him to win the title in the principality.

He may, however, have just announced himself as a genuine challenger to the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner…

Will Carlos Alcaraz bounce back by winning the Monte Carlo Masters?

If not, who will win the title?

Felix Auger-Aliassime beats Casper Ruud to win UTS Nimes

Auger-Aliassime has never won an ATP title on clay, but he just added a UTS trophy to his collection.

The Canadian won all three of his matches in Nimes, France, to win the title.

Auger-Aliassime beat two former clay-court Masters 1000 champions, Andrey Rublev and Casper Ruud, to win the event.

UTS events use a very different format from the ATP Tour, as players compete in ‘quarters’ rather than sets or games, but that shouldn’t take away from Auger-Aliassime’s triumph.

He may now head into the Monte Carlo Masters with the belief that he can cause an upset or two…

Seeded sixth, Auger-Aliassime has received a bye into the second round, where he will meet either Marin Cilic or a qualifier.

Should he win that match, he could well face Ruud in a UTS final rematch in round three.

The top three, Sinner, Alexander Zverev, and Alcaraz, might then stand between Auger-Aliassime and Monte Carlo glory.

But Auger-Aliassime won’t want to get ahead of himself thinking about the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final just yet, though.

After all, the Monte Carlo Masters is statistically his worst event at the Masters 1000 level.

The 25-year-old has only won two of the eight matches he’s played in Monte Carlo, and those two wins came against qualifiers (Juan Ignacio Londero and Matteo Arnaldi).

It looked like he made a step forward in Nimes, but there’s reason to be cautious ahead of his seventh appearance in the Monte Carlo main draw.
