Eva Lys sends social media message to Iga Swiatek after losing to her at the Canadian Open

Fan favorite Eva Lys was looking to pick up a first career top-ten win when she took on Poland’s Iga Swiatek.

The German star defeated Leolia Jeanjean and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in rounds one and two to book her place in the third round of the Canadian Open.

There, she played the number two seed, Swiatek, who won her sixth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last time out.

Carrying that momentum forward, Swiatek dominated Lys 6-2, 6-2, sending the 23-year-old out of the tournament.

Reacting to her third career defeat against Swiatek, Lys sent the world number three a message on social media.

Posting on Instagram, Lys commented on her Canadian Open exit, sharing a joke with Swiatek.

“Iga Swiatek, always ending my good runs lol,” she said.

“Tried my best, came a little closer this time. We appreciate the small steps.

“Biggest thank you to the amazing fans in Montreal, you made me feel loved. Until next year.”

On three occasions now, Swiatek has ended strong runs for Lys at WTA tournaments, as the Pole continues to be a thorn in her side.

2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix

Lys made her WTA Tour singles debut at the 2022 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, advancing to the main draw via qualifying.

Making her debut in front of her home fans, Lys took down Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in round one.

It was in round two that her run came to an abrupt end, however, as Swiatek dismantled Lys in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

Unfortunately for Lys, that wasn’t the worst defeat she suffered at the hands of Swiatek…

2025 Australian Open

Entering the qualifying competition at the 2025 Australian Open as the 23rd seed, Lys narrowly missed out on a place in the main draw when she fell to Destanee Aiava in the final match.

Given a lifeline, Lys made her way through to the main draw as a lucky loser and wasn’t prepared to let the opportunity slip through her fingers.

Advancing to the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, Lys met Swiatek for a second time but was thoroughly outclassed once more.

Winning just one game, Lys lost to Swiatek 0-6, 1-6, as her career-best run at a major came to an end on Rod Laver Arena.

Swiatek then ended Lys’ best-ever WTA 1000 campaign in Montreal, as the German will no doubt hope to avoid the Pole over the next few months.

If she can, there’s a strong chance we will see Lys make her top 50 debut before too long.

Eva Lys closes in on the WTA top 50 after impressive Montreal campaign

Lys has risen to 57th in the Live WTA Rankings following her run to the third round of the Canadian Open, as she nears a top 50 breakthrough.

The 23-year-old is less than 200 points away from the top 50, a gap she will be eager to close during the upcoming North American hard-court tournaments.

Lys is scheduled to play three more tournaments in North America before heading over to Asia for the final few months of the year.

• 2025 Cleveland (WTA 250) – Begins August 18
• 2025 US Open (Grand Slam) – Begins August 25

Next up for Lys is a trip to Ohio for the Cincinnati Open, an event at which she will be making her tournament debut in 2025.
