Emma Raducanu highlighted the mistake she made against Emma Navarro that she was able to correct just in time.

The 23-year-old won back-to-back matches for the first time since January’s Australian Open against her namesake.

In a three-set thriller, the former British number one won two tiebreaks to book her spot in the third round of the Miami Open.

This victory ensured that Emma Raducanu reached the third round of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career.

Emma Raducanu explains the mistake she corrected against Emma Navarro in Miami

Raducanu took the lead against Emma Navarro, but after the American took the second set 6-2, she appeared to be the favourite going into the decider.

This is not a surprise given that nobody played and won more three-set matches than Navarro dating back to 2024.

Aware of this fact, Raducanu upped her game up to take the final set and ultimately the match, but she admitted that she had a change of tactics and mindset in the match’s closing stages.

“I think there were patches in the match, I think at certain moments I was too defensive and I was running,” Raducanu said post-match.

“Then I think the big moments, in the third set and also in the tiebreak in the first, I really went for the shots. At 6-6 in both of those sets I actually was just like if I am going to go out I am not going to let her take me out.

“At least I will put everything on it and I know that the most successful is when I am taking the shots early and really going for it. It’s just a better feeling in a way to not have any regrets, like maybe I could have gone for that shot a little bit more.

“Even when I was going for it and missing certain drive volleys for example in big moments after a very long point, as frustrating as it is, I knew I was doing the right thing and that was why I was getting rewarded for certain points.”

Who will Emma Raducanu play next?

Following the biggest win of Raducanu’s season so far, she will take on another American in the third round.

The former US Open champion will face McCartney Kessler, who has recorded some impressive victories in 2025 so far.

She defeated Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova in Dubai, and reached the ATX Open final where she lost to Jessica Pegula.

Kessler came from a set down to beat Linda Nosková in the second round, and she will aim to build on her momentum when she plays Raducanu for the first time.
