Emma Navarro has endured a difficult start to the 2026 season on the WTA Tour.

The American star, currently ranked 20th in the world, hit a career high of eighth back in 2024 after reaching a maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open that year.

Since then, however, Navarro has struggled to build on her break, exiting several tournaments in the early stages.

One tournament she has found success during that time period is the Merida Open in Mexico, where she claimed the title in 2025 to add a second tour-level crown to her tally.

But Navarro’s title defence at this year’s edition of the event was brought to an abrupt end.

Emma Navarro’s failed title defence at the Merida Open

Navarro, seeded second at the 2026 Merida Open, lost in her opening match to Chinese star Zhang Shuai.

Zhang emerged victorious in straight sets to knock out the reigning champion, who has really struggled this year so far.

The ASB Classic marked Navarro’s first tournament appearance of the season, where she fell to Britain’s Francesca Jones in her first match.

Then, Navarro managed to pick up two wins at the Adelaide International and reach the quarterfinals, but was knocked out by ninth seed Diana Shnaider.

Following her best run of 2026 in Adelaide, Navarro suffered two first-round exits at the Australian Open and the Abu Dhabi Open.

She fell in the second round of both WTA 1000 events in the Middle East: The Qatar Open and the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Now, Navarro has lost her seventh match of the season in Mexico, having won just four.

Emma Navarro’s results at majors since the 2024 US Open semifinal run

After advancing to the final four at Flushing Meadows in 2024, Navarro has failed to match her career-best major finish.

Her best Grand Slam result in 2025 came at the Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals before losing to Iga Swiatek.

She then crashed out in the first round of Roland Garros, and bowed out in round four and three at Wimbledon and the US Open, respectively.

In her first major appearance of 2026, she exited the Australian Open in the first round with a loss to Magda Linette.
