Dominic Thiem delivered a glowing assessment of tennis’ new generation led by Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
The Austrian has struggled with injury over the last three years and in that time has seen some younger players begin to make an impact on the sport.
The likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have continued to break records and add to their historic legacy, but two names in particular have ushered in a new era on the ATP Tour.
Ahead of his retirement at the end of the season, the 30-year-old says he is not worried about the future of the game.
What did Dominic Thiem say about Jannik SInner and Carlos Alcaraz?
Thiem is winding down his career after announcing in May that 2024 will be his final season on the tour. He commenced his final grass court campaign with a defeat to veteran Gael Monfils at the Mallorca Championships.
During his time on the Spanish island, the 2020 US Open champion commented on the current landscape of the game and he is impressed by what the likes of Sinner and Alcaraz, the top two players in the world, have brought to tennis.
“There are some players from the old generation who are still playing incredible tennis and we have an incredible new generation,” Thiem said.
“Now there are two guys who have been No. 1, Sinner and Alcaraz, who are incredible and play great tennis. I love watching them and probably all the fans like watching them, so tennis is in very good hands.”

What happened in Dominic Thiem’s most recent match?
On Monday Thiem played his first match since bowing out of the French Open qualifiers in May. The former World number three was undefeated against Monfils after winning their six previous meetings.
But the Frenchman produced a solid performance to beat Thiem for the first time on the back of winning 90% of his first serve points.
He also did not face any break points on the way to claiming a 6-3, 7-6(3) win in one hour and 18 minutes.
“It was my first grass match for three years and I felt I had to serve good and be aggressive against Dominic,” Monfils said post-match. “The weather is good, the stadium was full and I really like the vibes here. Now I’ll try to win again. It would be great to have two wins in a row under the belt.”
