David Ferrer was handed a big blow after Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Davis Cup Finals at the last minute.

Alcaraz claimed the Davis Cup was his biggest goal for the remainder of the 2025 season, and was part of Spain’s team for the Finals in Bologna.

However, the world number one will no longer be part of the team after a decision was made following Alcaraz’s defeat to Jannik Sinner at the ATP Finals.

Alcaraz had been struggling physically throughout the ATP Finals, and after confirming he had suffered a hamstring injury he officially pulled out of the Davis Cup Finals.

David Ferrer reveals how he is now feeling about Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing from Spain’s Davis Cup team

Spain’s Davis Cup captain Ferrer has come under fire for some of his selection choices recently, and he has now had to deal with more turmoil after Alcaraz’s late withdrawal.

Ferrer has since spoken to Punto de Break after no longer having Alcaraz, and he has explained how his feelings have now changed on the situation, as he now feels more optimistic.

“It’s changed. It’s changed, obviously,” said Ferrer. “Yesterday was a tough day. Of course, Carlos came, and at first we thought he would be able to be there, then he had the MRI, and after talking with the doctor, Ángel Cotorro, he told me it wasn’t going to be easy.

“We’re talking about a very important player, the world number one, and someone I knew we needed, in a way, to win the Davis Cup… and he can’t be with us. It was tough, but this morning has been different.

“I’ve always believed that I handle these kinds of problems well: as the hours go by, you see what solutions you can come up with. Besides, I see my players training very well.

“They’re very, very enthusiastic, and that gives me confidence, because with this format, it’s also true that everything is more even. I have faith, I have faith, I have faith. I have faith today, even more so tomorrow, and on Thursday I’ll be incredibly motivated (smiles). That’s my character, and it always will be.”

Will you still be watching the Davis Cup without Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner this year?

David Ferrer suggests if he still thinks Spain can win the Davis Cup without Carlos Alcaraz

Following Alcaraz’s withdrawal, Spain now only have four players in their lineup in the forms of Jaume Munar, Pablo Carreno Busta, Pedro Martinez and Marcel Granollers.

Despite Ferrer previously claiming that Spain needed Alcaraz to win, he has now suggested that he has faith that his current team could even go all the way.

“Yes. I truly believe they can do it, because there’s a good team atmosphere and good things can happen,” answered Ferrer. “When I was a player, I had faith in myself a lot, and I still feel the same way about that. I always see that point where I feel we can hook them.”

When speaking more in depth about his team, Ferrer explained that he believes the experience of coming back to beat Denmark in their Qualifier tie in Malaga earlier this year could be a really helpful experience for the Davis Cup Finals.

“Yes, yes. Besides, they compete very well,” said Ferrer. “If I analyze it, look: Jaume, I think, already knows what he’s doing and has gotten rid of the pressure of being here, because he had it in Marbella. He’s taken some of that off his shoulders and I think he’s come in a different light.

“Pedro always competes well as part of a team; he’s a fantastic player. In that respect, and with all due respect, he reminds me of Feli. And Marcel, what I said in the press conference is true, I consider him a different player than last year. He’s a player with much more experience and much more self-confidence. You only have to see him in doubles practice, the confident way he takes on the responsibility.”

Ferrer will lead the Spanish Davis Cup team when they play their quarterfinal tie against Czechia in Bologna on Thursday, November 20.

The last time that Spain won the Davis Cup came in 2019, which only Granollers was a part of.
