Daniil Medvedev suffered a complete disaster in his first round at Roland Garros, suffering a shock loss to Adam Walton.
In an altogether crazy encounter in Paris, 23-time ATP champion Medvedev sulked consistently before falling to the Australian in five sets.
The sixth seed at Roland Garros, the Russian was beaten 2-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1, 4-6 in a roller-coaster first round upset.
But that wasn’t the only moment of misery for Medvedev, who was spotted being told off by his wife midway through the first set.
Who is your dark horse for the Roland Garros title this year?
Daniil Medvedev told off by his wife in Roland Garros loss
Daria Medvedeva said to her husband amid the hot conditions in Paris: “It’s hot for everybody.
“Everybody is suffering.
“You need to behave!”
Responding, the frustrated ATP star said: “When I start finding the court I’ll start to behave.”
Medvedev is, of course, well known for failing to keep his emotions in check during matches, having broken many rackets and berated many umpires throughout his career.
The result represents the biggest win of Walton’s career, while Medvedev has now fallen in the first round of Roland Garros seven times from his 10 appearances.
Medvedev finished the match with both a better percentage of service points won (60% v 57%) and return points won (43% v 40%), but still couldn’t prevail.
He also managed more aces (9 v 3), although he did record five double faults compared to just one from his victorious opponent.

Daniil Medvedev’s Grand Slam finals record
Medvedev’s history at the clay-court tournament suggests that it was not such a surprise after all, but he will still be very disappointed to have suffered an early exit.
The former world number one has never made it beyond the quarterfinals in Paris, which comes in stark contrast to his efforts at the other three Grand Slams.
He has won the US Open once and reached three Australian Open finals, as well as reaching the semifinals of Wimbledon.
| Result | Year | Tournament | Surface | Opponent | Score |
| Loss | 2019 | US Open | Hard | Rafael Nadal | 5–7, 3–6, 7–5, 6–4, 4–6 |
| Loss | 2021 | Australian Open | Hard | Novak Djokovic | 5–7, 2–6, 2–6 |
| Win | 2021 | US Open | Hard | Novak Djokovic | 6–4, 6–4, 6–4 |
| Loss | 2022 | Australian Open | Hard | Rafael Nadal | 6–2, 7–6(7–5), 4–6, 4–6, 5–7 |
| Loss | 2023 | US Open | Hard | Novak Djokovic | 3–6, 6–7(5–7), 3–6 |
| Loss | 2024 | Australian Open | Hard | Jannik Sinner | 6–3, 6–3, 4–6, 4–6, 3–6 |
But Medvedev would have been feeling somewhat confident following his recent run in Rome, where he reached the semifinals before losing to Jannik Sinner.
He has, however, failed to take that momentum to Paris, where Walton now turns his attention to Zachary Svajda in round two.
