Daniil Medvedev’s hopes of carving his name into the US Open trophy for a second time were crushed in defeat to Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals.
Medvedev set out a game plan to beat Sinner, but he came unstuck by the on-court prowess and aggressive attitude of the world number one, who prevailed 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
It was a rematch of this year’s gripping Australian Open final in which Sinner battled back from a two-set deficit to claim his maiden grand slam title.
The Italian, however, made sure that he took more of a stranglehold in this match and was able to pull clear and book his spot in his first US Open semi-final.

High risk, no reward for Daniil Medvedev in loss to Jannik Sinner
Daniil Medvedev is no stranger to success at the US Open, having appeared in the final in three of the previous five editions, notably clinching the title in 2021.
However, this quarter-final matchup against red-hot Jannik Sinner was never going to be easy.
After crashing out in four sets, Medvedev offered his thoughts on the match.
“The theory I have is that I saw it on practice the week before the tournament,” Medvedev explained. “The balls and courts are not easy, it was the same in Montreal and Cincinnati.
“It’s not super easy to control them so sometimes you feel like you are doing all good and then you miss and have question marks.
“But before I played I was more confident in myself that I will win this match even if I missed some shots so maybe I was going for some more risky shots, I was missing just a bit more and then at one moment I got lost in my misses.
“Maybe it was the same for him a little bit because I still managed many times to put him in trouble even if it was not enough, so that’s another theory I had.”
Who will win the US Open now?
After Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic crashed out in the third round, Sinner assumed his position as the clear favorite to soar to glory.
Now, with a comprehensive win over the world number five, this storyline is starting to look ever more likely, but the home hopes will have something to say about that.
There has been much anticipation of American success at the US Open this year, and there is now guaranteed to be a native in a grand slam final for the first time since 2009, with Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe forming the second semi-final.
Despite Sinner establishing himself as the firm favorite, it really is all to play for in New York and, who knows, the stars might just be aligning for an American to rise to the challenge.
