Novak Djokovic’s decision to cut ties with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) has been labelled a ‘bad look’ for the breakaway player union by former world number one Daniil Medvedev.

In a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, Djokovic announced he will ‘step away completely’ from the PTPA.

The Serb, who co-founded the organisation with former Canadian star Vasek Pospisil, said: “This decision comes after ongoing concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the way my voice and image have been represented.

“I am proud of the vision that Vasek and I shared when founding the PTPA, giving players a stronger, independent voice – but it has become clear that my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organisation.”

Now, Djokovic’s 2021 US Open final conqueror, Medvedev, has weighed in on the situation.

Daniil Medvedev comments on Novak Djokovic’s decision

After his opening win at the Brisbane International, Medvedev was asked in a press conference about Djokovic’s decision.

The Russian responded: “I saw it. For sure, it’s kind of a bad look on PTPA, because he was a co-founder, so I don’t know the exact decisions behind… or sorry, like, factors behind his decision. So tough for me to say.

“I was always for PTPA, because I do think ATP can improve some things, and they are the monopoly in the sport.

If you could change one rule in tennis what would it be and why?

“Yeah, it’s just, at the same time, I know my priorities and, for example, I was never involved as a decision-maker in PTPA, but I always said I think it’s good even if we have maybe more parties trying to not even change something in tennis but trying to look into tennis if there are some things to change.

“So that’s kind of it. I’m not for it, not against it. I think guys should continue doing their job and try to do it as good as they can.”

What Novak Djokovic said the aim of the PTPA was in 2021

As per the Guardian in 2021, Djokovic’s ‘aim’ for the PTPA was revealed.

He said: “We want to be accepted, respected and acknowledged. That’s what we want. That’s what we deserve as players.

“When I say ‘we’, I don’t just think and say that it’s about Vasek and myself or PTPA management.

What is your boldest tennis prediction for 2026?

“It’s about players and hundreds of players that are part of PTPA movement and part of PTPA initiatives.

“This is what our aim is. We will never find out how PTPA will be incorporated or not incorporated within the current ecosystem of tennis, the structure, until certain things are done and certain steps are made.”

Djokovic concluded his leaving statement on X by saying: “I will continue to focus on my tennis, my family, and contributing to the sport in ways that reflect my principles and integrity.

“I wish the players and those involved the best as they move forward, but for me, this chapter is now closed.”

Djokovic is set to begin his 2026 season at the Adelaide International in Australia.
