Daniil Medvedev explains why he was left ‘frustrated’ in his latest match at the Shanghai Masters despite winning

Daniil Medvedev was able to overcome his frustrations to win his third round match at the Shanghai Masters against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Medvedev parted ways with his long-term coach Gilles Cervara after the US Open, where he lost in the first round.

The former world number one then added a Grand Slam champion to his team, with Medvedev hiring Thomas Johansson as his new coach.

This new partnership helped the Russian reach the semifinals in Beijing, before Medvedev had to retire and had conflict with the umpire.

Medvedev appears to have got over this injury concern, but he was not entirely happy with his latest win in China.

Medvedev has a big opportunity at the Shanghai Masters this year, especially as Jannik Sinner is no longer in the tournament.

After winning his third round match against Davidovich Fokina, 6-3 7-6(5), Medvedev spoke to Russian outlet Tennis Bolshe about how he was feeling.

Medvedev appeared pleased with his first set performance, but was a bit frustrated by how the second set played out.

“In the second set, I wasn’t enjoying it that much let’s say, I wasn’t playing exactly the way I wanted to,” said Medvedev. “It was physically tough. There were some small moments where I wanted, not exactly to go all-out attacking, but to play a bit stronger to keep him from attacking and I couldn’t do it.

“My ball wasn’t flying like it did in the first set. In the first set, basically I didn’t give him a chance to attack. But in the second, I couldn’t always do that. But I’m happy that I won and overall, I like the way I’m playing right now. So I hope I can play even better in the next round.”

Medvedev added after being asked another question, “I’m just playing well right now. I played pretty much the same against him in Beijing, I controlled the whole match.

“That’s why I was a bit frustrated in the second set, because there were moments where I could’ve played a bit better and I couldn’t. Maybe I needed to add just 2% more power to the ball, but I was tired. But as I said the main thing is that I won and now that is not important.”

Medvedev may be the highest ranked player in his quarter of the draw, but he now has to face someone who he has never beaten before.

That player is Learner Tien, who Medvedev retired against at the China Open, despite leading the American teenager by a set and a break.

This was the second time that they have played this year, with Tien also beating Medvedev in a thriller at the Australian Open.

Tien is predicted to achieve big things in his career, and will be a huge test for Medvedev in Shanghai this year.

Medvedev will look to end his unbeaten record against Tien when they play in Shanghai on Wednesday, October 8.
