Daniil Medvedev confirms what his fitness levels are like as he progresses further in Miami

Daniil Medvedev says he is feeling good after winning his opening match at the Miami Open.

Medvedev defeated Rei Sakamoto 6-7(10-12), 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, where he is the ninth seed.

He needed two hours and four minutes to defeat the Japanese wildcard, who knocked out American Aleksandar Kovacevic in his opening match.

Medvedev now meets Francisco Cerundolo in the third round of the Miami Open, which he entered after reaching the Indian Wells final.

But after losing that to Jannik Sinner, the Russian has recovered and has just picked up his 19th win of the season.

Medvedev boasts a superb 19-4 record for his busy 2026 so far, and has now shared insight into his fitness levels ahead of another match.

Daniil Medvedev feels ‘very fresh’ after first Miami Open win

When asked by Tennis Channel how mentally fresh he is feeling right now, Medvedev responded: “I think very fresh.

“I mean, for sure like you get a bit tired playing tournaments, but at the same time, it’s not my first year on tour, so I kind of know how to handle it.

“I’m also someone who always tries to think about win-win situations, which I will be honest there are a couple of tournaments on tour where it’s tough to see this win-win situation.

“But if you are in Miami, you lose early, you have more time to prepare clay and you have time to spend a good time in Miami.

“But if you play good through the tournament it’s great because, well that’s what you are here for, so it’s a win-win.

“There are a couple of tournaments on tour where that’s not the case, but here it is, so I’m happy with whatever happens.”

Daniil Medvedev admits ‘bitter feeling’ from Indian Wells

It’s been a tremendous season so far for Medvedev, who has managed to return to the ATP top 10 thanks to his efforts.

He has secured titles in both Brisbane and Dubai, and fell just short of a third against Sinner at Indian Wells.

Sharing what he took away mentally from the event, he said: “To be honest, it was just a great tournament where I made the final.

“So the final is, of course, a tiny bit bitter feeling because you always want to win the tournament.

“But it’s also always a lot of confidence, especially playing against someone like Jannik and being that close that okay, I’m in a good shape right now, let’s try to go for a good tournament in Miami.

“And again, the first set was not the way I wanted. There were four break points I think in this game at one-all in the second.

“So I’m happy that I managed to turn this around. Next round, next opportunity to do something amazing.”

Medvedev is unsurprisingly glad to have returned to winning ways after that meeting with Sinner, which he lost 6-7(6-8), 6-7(4-7).

He can take great pride and confidence from the match and the run overall, during which he defeated the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper.

The Russian could be reunited with Sinner in the semifinals of the Miami Open, with world number one Alcaraz representing a potential final opponent.
